George County MsArchives Cemeteries.....Mount Olive Cemetery - Partial Survey More to Come ************************************************ Copyright. You will travel east on Highway 98 out of Lucedale, Mississippi toward Mobile, Alabama. On your right you will pass the Mississippi Highway Weight Station, continue east for approximately another 500 yards. Here you will see the intersection with Moffett Road on your right. Take this right hand exit and now go about 1/4 mile. Here you will see Talbert Road on your left, take this left hand turn and a short distance ahead you will see Mount Olive Church and cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by a chain link fence and is in very good condition. Mount Olive Church and cemetery (#1) were first located in the Shipman Community near the railroad station. The original church was established by the Rev. Dave Cook in 1898. The church was moved to its present day location in 1946 by the Rev. W.R. Nobles. The Shipman Community was abandoned due to an illness there. A new cemetery (#2) was established in 1985 at the new church location and the first burial was that of a Mrs. Clara French. From dates given to me, burials continued at the original cemetery (#1), until sometime in 1981. By road it is approximately 4 miles between these two cemeteries, and because of recent hurricanes there is no longer a road to the original (#1) cemetery. You must take Shipman Road and where it crosses the railroad tracks, park your vehicle and walk east toward Mobile, Alabama for 1/2 mile. there you will find a small road to your right that will lead you to the cemetery. There were 5 people that had been buried in the old (#1) cemetery that were moved to the new cemetery sometime after 1985. I will list them as being transferred. The original Cemetery, Mount Olive #1, was walked by Mr. Clarence Talbert and Jimmy Trussell, Mount Olive #2 cemetery was walked by Jimmy Trussell. Information was taken in both cemeteries from headstone inscriptions, temporary grave markers, and from church records provided me by Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Talbert. We have a Mrs. Fannie Whigham buried in the #1 cemetery that was a former slave. She was sold into slavery in Charleston, South Carolina, this is the Great-Great Grandmother of Mr. Clarence Talbert.I will put either (#1) or (#2) beside all the names to distinguish which cemetery they are buried in. (#1) being the original cemetery and (#2) being the new one that is located beside the present day church building. I want to thank Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Talbert for their help in surveying this cemetery.
