This turn will put you on Vernal River Road, now you will travel this road for 4.8 tenths of a mile. Here there will be a small house on your right with a chain link fence around it, and on the left about 150 yards farther will be a red brick house sitting back off the road a short distance. On your left between these two houses is a long sloping hill, with cut over timber. All that is left is brush and briars, however as you look up the hill on a line about even with the brick house you will see four pine trees and amoungst them there are two white headstones. The one on the left is inscribed Unknown Confederate Soldier, the one on the right has two inscriptions. The top inscription reads Unknown Confederate Soldier, and the one on the lower half reads Unknown U.S. Soldier. The story told of these graves is that after the battle, these soldiers were buried together in a wagon, talking with others about this I'm led to believe that they were indeed buried in crude caskets fashioned from a wagon. I was told of this cemetery by John Kittrell, and also walked this area on April 13, 2007. These stones are only visible when this timber has been harvested, otherwise they are surrounded by dense underbrush. By summers end these will again fade from view, and until the next crop of pine timber is harvested , they will remain hidden. This timber should be ready for harvest again in about 15 to 20 years.
