Sharon Nell Pavolini, age 67, of Ocean Springs, died June 2, 2008, in Ocean Spring. Born on March 13, 1941, to Louis and Inez Ryan Pavolini. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Inez Ryan Pavolini, and a brother, David Louis Pavolini. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery. Thomas John Skrmetti, Sr., 82, native of Biloxi, died June 2, 2008, in Biloxi. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During World War II, he was one of thousands of young sailors and Marines who saw the American flag raised over Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he served as a machine gunner in the United States Marine Corps. He also fought in the battles of Saipan, Guam and Okinawa. He later was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served in Korea from November 1950 to May 1951. Mr. Skrmetti married Ursula Margaret Simmons in 1947 and together they had seven sons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ursula Margaret Simmons Skrmetti; his son, Captain Gregory Brian Skrmetti, Sr.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mateo Skrmetti, Sr.; and his sister, Mary Ann Cummins. He was born May 31, 1938 in Louisville, KY to the late Elwyn N. & Mary (Riley) Wilkinson Sr. He and the former Nancy Wade were married in Gulfport, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Viola Byrd, of Picayune, MS, and an older brother, Arthur Byrd, Jr. He joined the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps in 1942, when he was 17 years old. After a tour of duty in the South Pacific, he served in the Army of Occupation in Paris, France. Jim made an anatomical gift of his body to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS, so there will be no funeral or burial services. Mr. Breland served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Second Brigade Commander in the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, and active member of the Pearl River County Historical Society. Robert Anthony Calvey, age 83, born May 17, 1925, in Flint, Michigan. Mr. Calvey was a resident of Harvest, AL and longtime resident of Baton Rouge, LA and Diamondhead, MS. Died June 4, 2008, at the Birmingham VA Medical Center in AL. Robert served in the U. S. Navy as Yeoman Second Class Officer during WWII and Korean Wars with accolades. He spoke highly of his Navy fellowship and all his friends at the U. S. Armed Services Home in Gulfport, MS. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo H. Calvey; mother, Mary S. EOC Jack Lloyd Fennell, Sr., U.S. Navy, Ret., age 71, of Long Beach, died June 4, 2008 in Long Beach, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Bates Fennell and Olivia Estelle Fennell; his daughter, Jackie Lynn Fennell; and his son, Jack Lloyd Fennell, Jr. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years where he was a Vietnam War veteran, earning the rank of EOC. June 6 Charles Cameron, Jr., age 61, of Gulfport died June 6, 2008, in Gulfport. Robert L. "Bob" Daniels, Jr., age 83, died June 6, 2008, in Gulfport. He was born September 26, 1924, in Jackson, MS to Robert Lee and Ida Reeves Daniels, but the family relocated to Gulfport in 1928. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1942 and served in the latter part of World War II as a flag yeoman with the Seventh Fleet in the Pacific, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, earning four ribbons and one battle star. Mr. Daniels was appointed official chancery court reporter in 1956 and served until 1968 when he was appointed official U. S. District Court reporter. Mr. Daniels was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth and his sister Alice May Anders and husband Jack. Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Hoyte Chesley Johnson, 69, died June 6, 2008. Dale served in the Navy for two years, and retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant in 1969 after 21 years of service. He served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War. Geany 'Gean' Rollin Curlee, 81, died June 8, 2008. A native of Biloxi, and had been a resident of Isle of Wight County, VA for the past 20 years. Gean was a Navy veteran of WWII and Korea. He retired from the military as a Chief Petty Officer in 1969 after 20 years of service. After retirement, Gean remained of the Tiger Team (U.S. Navy) and continued to work with the nuclear Titan submarines. He was an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ. Joseph West, Jr., 80, of Biloxi, MS, died June 8, 2008 in Biloxi. Mr. West was a native of Beaver, OH and a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, CO. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1968 as a Sgt. Major. Mr. West was stationed at Keesler AFB in 1946. He also served in the Korean War where he received several medals of honor including a Bronze Star. "Bill" Butt, 68, a resident of Biloxi since 1965, died June 9, 2008, the day of his 45th wedding anniversary. Born in Pocahontas, VA. He retired from Keesler A.F.B. after 20 years of service with the Air Force. He had worked with WLOX as an engineer for the past 30 years. Bill was a volunteer fireman with D'Iberville and West Jackson County. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Butt, four half-sisters and one half-brother. Donald Louis Bentz, age 28, and a resident of Long Beach, died on Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Pass Christian. A1998 graduate of Long Beach High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on March 17, 1958 and proudly served his country for over 22 years.
