Luther Verlin Magers, 84, died April 1, 2008 in Diamondhead. Luther was a retired officer of the U.S. Air Force after 24 years. Private services will be held at a later date. April 2 Sidney F. Malpass, Sr., 89, of Biloxi, died April 2, 2008. Mr. Malpass was known as "the man with the cows on Popp's Ferry Road". He was a lifetime farmer. He was featured in the Sun Herald ten years ago for his love and commitment to farming. He had a dairy on Popp's Ferry in the 1950's. He was married to former Wilda Justina Dunn of Biloxi for 61 years. He served his country in the 1940's during WW II in the Navy. Mr. Malpass was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Wilda Dunn Malpass; two sisters and one brother. Graveside services: Biloxi National Cemetery. Apr. 3 Mrs. Erma G. Alfred Joseph "AL" Richter, Sr., 84, of Gulfport, died April 5, 2008. Interment: Southern Memorial Park. April 6 Major General William E. Bryan Jr., USAF retired, died Sunday, April 6, 2008. He entered the Army Air Corps in March 1942 at the age of 21 from his hometown of Flint, Michigan. Dad flew 114 combat missions in WW II in the P-51 Mustang fighter from 1943 to 1945. Stationed in England with the 339th Fighter Group, he achieved status of "Ace," reserved only for VSH fighter pilots. A career military man, in August of 1950 Dad again flew the P-51 Mustang on 121 combat missions with the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing during the Korean War. In 1967, while commanding the 831st Air Division, he had occasion to fly a mission from Thailand to North Vietnam. Thus he would declare that he flew fighters in three wars. He was later promoted to Brigadier General and served 18 months in Vietnam. As a highly decorated command pilot with greater than 5,000 hours of flight time, he finished his career as a Major General with 33 years of service to his country at which time he retired to Ocean Springs, Jackson County, Miss. His accommodations include the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, The Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal, the Croix de Guerre, and the Air Medal with 23 Oak Leaf Clusters. General Bryan will be sent to Arlington, Va., for interment in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Elsie Bernice Sund, age 77, died April 6, 2008 in Biloxi. Service: Biloxi National Cemetery. April 7 Michael W. "Bean" Brackin, age 61, of Gulfport, died Monday, April 7, 2008, in Gulfport; born in Dothan, AL. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilton E. Brackin. Service: First Baptist Church of Biloxi. Mary M. Jones, 82 of Waveland. Burial: Waveland Cemetery. Virginia G. Roseman, 83, peacefully joined her husband, Fred, on April 7, 2008. Recently residing in Scottsdale, AZ, her heart had never left Diamondhead, MS. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Felicity Sardos; her husband, Cary H. "Jimmy" Stewart, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in Birmingham, Alabama. Born August 28, 1930, in Warrensburg, Missouri. At the age of eleven, Jimmy had a paper route. He had the privilege of delivering the first "Extra!" Warrensburg had ever known. It was December 9th, 1941 and Pearl Harbor had just been bombed. His education was interrupted by the draft; it was 1950 and the U.S. was at war with Korea. He worked in the army laboratory. Jim lost his wife December 9, 2006. A highly decorated veteran of Vietnam, he retired after twenty two years from the U.S. Navy Seabees as a Senior Chief Utilitiesman. She was later adopted by the late Mr. and Mrs. Book Bedenfield and moved to the Palmer's Crossing Community, located near Hattiesburg, MS. She later met and married the late Rogers O. Tyler, Sr. on August 7, 1946. To this union eight children were born, one daughter, Brenda Faye preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Lee, Grady and Oscar Fuller; two sisters, Mandie Mitchell and Cassie Lee, and one brother-in-law, Tebbie Bowie. April 17 Alice Gwendolyn Blackman (Mrs. Marcus J.) Broadus was born in Charleston, S.C., on February 17, 1917 and passed away in Arnaudville, LA on April 17, 2008. She was the youngest child of Malcolm Lee Blackman and Alice Rowena Lewis Blackman. She married Marcus Broadus, her high school sweetheart, after the war and settled in Arlington, TX. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marcus J. Broadus, sister Marylee Blackman Windsor and brother, Lieutenant Lewis Blackman. He was of the Christian faith and was an artist who played guitar with groups such as James Brown and AL Green. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Brown and Mary Frances Speed Davis. Aline Frances Goff, age 91, of Milton, FL, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2008. Until her last 6 years, Aline lived at her home on Goffville Road in Ocean Springs. She and her husband, George, celebrated 62 years of marriage before his death. Aline Frances Latimer, daughter of Mary Alice and William Latimer, was born January 28, 1917, at Popp's Ferry in Harrison County and was the only surviving member of her eight siblings: Rose Thornton, Hannah Flynn, Lillie Trumbull, Theodore, Alfred, Henry, William and Guy Latimer. Since 1948, Aline and George were active members of the Community of Christ Church in Ocean Springs. Besides being an active mother of nine children, she also taught Sunday School. Mrs. Goff was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Goff Sr., two infant sons, Donald Lee and Frank Oliver Goff and two grandsons, Thomas and Clifford Miller. Burial: Coalville Cemetery. Mr. Joseph Floyd "Bee" Hungerford, 87, of Biloxi, MS, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, in Biloxi. Born in Gueydan, LA, to Albert and Matilda Hungerford. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following flight school in Dallas and Corpus Christi, he was assigned to the USS Yorktown (II), which was known for being in the thick of 11 major battles which turned the tide of war in the Pacific. His aerial tenacity as a dive-bomber pilot was quickly recognized in the battle of the Carolinas, around Truk, where they destroyed 35 Japanese ships and downed 260 aircraft. His missions included attacks on three enemy ships. As a division commander, he led attacks on Okinawa before and during the invasion. The battle for Saipan followed, adding another Battle Star. His division was transferred to the USS Shangri La for the upcoming invasion of Japan. Going into Tokyo Bay, his plane was hit repeatedly by anti-aircraft fire. He continued his run on the pride of the Japanese Navy, released his bombs and turned for home. On the next mission, as he entered Tokyo Bay, the Japanese had surrendered. He was the third pilot to land on Japanese soil, just behind General McArthur's plane. One of his fond memories was using the stern of the USS Biloxi as a marker for turning his plane to land on the carrier. Among local WW II Veterans, "Bee" is recognized as one of the most heroic of that war, having earned the Navy Cross, and released in 1945 with the rank of Lt. Commander. Mr. Hungerford was preceded in death by his grandsons, Joshua Newman and Jerrod Thompson, six sister, seven brothers, and his son-in-law, Richard Giraud. She is survived by her children, Frederick George Creel of LA, Michael Paul Wright and his wife, Maria, of Vancleave, and Angela Deanna Gordon and her husband, Billy, of Philadelphia, MS; two sisters; and two grandchildren. A memorial service: 11289 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport. Ann Turner Roberts, 87, formerly of Laurel, passed away on Saturday, April 26th at Crescent Manor Convalescent Home, in Waterbury, CT. Born October 31, 1920 in Carroll County, MS, Mrs. Roberts married the late W. Carl Roberts on October 7, 1939. They were married for 60 years until her husband's death in 1999. During World War II, Mrs. Roberts was the first civilian employee to be hired at the camp for German prisoners of war in Clinton. She also worked as a secret undercover agent for the government at the camp, where she was secretary to the Post Engineer. After the war she was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Jackson, Gulfport and Biloxi, MS. April 27 Mrs. Sally Eleanor Steward Laufketter died Sunday, April 27, 2008. She was born April 16, 1930, in Marshalltown, Iowa. James had 30 years of service with the Sheriff Auxiliary between Harrison County and Imperial Valley, CA. His lifetime career, Producer/Director at Kessler Air Force Base, creating documentaries and training films of which his crowning achievement was "Project Warrior."
