For family research. Sept. 1 Mary Grace Carruth, age 83, of Gulfport died Monday, Sept 1, 2008 in Gulfport. Earl Guidry Sr., 58, of Gulfport, died, Sept 1, 2008 in Saucier. Jay Kleinman, age 57, of Mandeville, LA, died September 1, 2008 in Gulfport, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto Kleinman and Anne Kleinman. He was past owner of The Sandwich Company, and Chiquitta's Mexican Café in Waveland, MS and J's Restaurants' in Waveland, MS, Mandeville, LA and Covington, LA. Graveside service: Jefferson Memorial Gardens, St. Rose, LA. Jacob (Jake) Anthony Istvanditsch, age 70, died September 1, 2008 at his home in Ocean Springs, MS, with his wife, Maryann at his side. He was born in Baranja, Yugoslavia in 1938 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1951. He attended school in Freehold N.J. and served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis. Jacob was predeceased by his mother Marie Istvanditsch and his brother Frank Istvanditsch. Services are to be private at the families request. Zachary Glen Borton Sockman, born May 9, 1990 in Biloxi, MS, the son of Richard & Nan (Borton) Smith, Grand Junction, CO and Mark & Natalie Sockman of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, died September 1, 2008. Zach was a 2008 Graduate of Grand Junction High School. After graduation Zach took a working vacation in Florida and returned home recently with plans to join the United States Air Force in the fall. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Glen M. & Harriett Borton & Birdena T. Borton, and his great-ma, Lillian L. Rockwell; his grandmother, Mary A. Smith; three great uncles, David & Donald Rockwell and James Rogers; and cousin, Susie Rockwell. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 5, 2008 at the Mesa State College soccer field at 3:30 p.m. Internment: Chandlers Valley Cemetery, Chandlers Valley, PA beside his namesake Glen M. Borton. Mary Grace Morrison Thomas Carruth, age 83, of Gulfport died September 1, 2008, in Gulfport. Mrs. Thomas grew up in Heidelberg, MS. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her first husband, Orville Malcolm "Prof" Thomas; her son Malcolm Morrison "Mac" Thomas; and her second husband James Austin Carruth. Burial: Heidelberg Cemetery, Heidelberg, Jasper County, MS. Rebecca "Becky/Becca" Rae Fellows Thompson, age 83, a resident of Biloxi, died September 1, 2008, in Gulfport, MS. Mrs. Thompson was born on June 30, 1925 in Colorado Springs, CO, and grew up in Tulsa, OK. She married Rodney Stewart Thompson on January 9, 1944. Becky embraced her life in the Air Becky was involved in Air Force Officer's Wives Clubs at the many duty stations she and Rod were assigned, including: Travis AFB, CA; Metz, France; Minot AFB, ND; Clark AFB, Philippines, and Keesler AFB, Biloxi. Mrs. Thompson is preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Stewart Thompson; her son, Randall Fellows Thompson; her parents, Ray Stanley Fellows & Blanche Gertrude Johnson; her brother, Ray Stanley Fellows, Jr.; half-brother, Charles Ray Fellows; and half-sister, Anna Mae Sieck. Niman Sr., age 59, of Gulfport, MS died September 2, 2008 in Gulfport. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred V. Niman, and his brother, Robert O'Neal Niman. Funeral service: funeral home, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport, MS. Victoria Angeline Nemec, age 90, a resident of Long Beach, MS, died September 2, 2008, in Ocean Springs. Born March 10, 1918 in Chicago, IL, the second youngest of six children, to the late Christ and Nikolina Marich. She lived on the Coast for the last five years. Victoria was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James Nemec, and a son, Raymond Douglas. Burial: Long Beach City Cemetery. Mr. Stephen Kenneth Wetzel, Sr., His career included positions with Ferson Optics Division; The Boeing Company Saturn/Apollo Program, Michoud Test Facility; and systems test engineer with Saturn Launch Complex Kennedy Space Center, Florida. He was on the Board of Elders at Cedar Lake Christian Assembly in Biloxi and was a past president and member of the Full Gospel Business Mens Association. He also ser-ved a term as a Commissioner on the Jackson County Port Authority. Mr. Wetzel received the Department of Defense Value Engineering Award in 1995 and was awarded the US Navy AEGIS Ship-building Program Excellence Award four times for outstanding performance. In addition, he was honored as a recipient of the Group Award for AEGIS Excellence in 2006 for trials conduct. He was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, National Defense Industrial Association, Industrial Association, Industrial Committee for Test and Evaluation, International Test and Evaluation Association and Port of Pascagoula Advisory Group. Mr. Wetzel was preceded in death by his parents, Jacobina Sekul Gilich of Biloxi and Percy J. Wetzel, Jr. of Biloxi. Burial: Crestlawn Memorial Park. Sept. 3 Millard Wayne Qualls, 77, of Gulfport, MS, died September 3, 2008, in Gulfport. Mr. Qualls proudly served his country in the United States Army. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery. Mrs. Lonnie Lou Shaw Rimanich, age 86, a resident of Gulfport, died September 3, 2008, in Gulfport. She was raised in Crane Creek, Hancock County, MS. Gerald Rogers, 56, of D'Iberville, MS September 4, 2008 in Biloxi. Private services will be held. Sept. 9 William Allen "Bill" Bryant, 83, was born January 9, 1925, in Charlottesville, VA., to Dr. Kirby Knapp Bryant, and Esther Davis Bryant. Died September 9, 2008, Bill joined his wife of 55 years, Lilly Exum Bryant, who preceded him in death on December 31, 2006; and their daughter Ellen Melissa Bryant who preceded them both on January 14, 2000. Bill served in the submarine corps of the U. S. Navy seeing action in the South Pacific during WWII. Burial: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Sept. 10 Virborn D. Catchings, born to the late Earl Catchings, Jr. and Anner R. Catchings in Hazlehurst, MS on March 17, 1966, died September 10, 2008 in Gulfport, MS. Mr. Catchings was a resident of the coast for two years and resided in Jackson, MS over 14 years. Mrs. Carolyn McGee Morgan, 81 years old, died September 10, 2008, of pancreatic cancer in the Hospice wing of West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, FL. She was a resident of Fairhope, AL and formerly resided in Biloxi, MS. Mrs. Morgan was a homemaker, secretary, and Southern Baptist Missionary to Hong Kong. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Biloxi, and P.E.O., Chapter D. Mrs. Morgan was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas N. McGee and Zeddie Mills McGee. Private interment: Biloxi National Cemetery. Sept. 11 Linda M. Clements, age 79, of Newton, NC, formerly of Gulfport, MS, died September 11, 2008 in North Carolina. Mrs. Clements was a native of Collins, Covington County, MS and lived most of her life on the coast before moving to North Carolina in 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Levi Clements, a son, Timothy Clements, a grandson, Michael Clements, and a brother, Verlon McKenzie. Interment: Biloxi National Cemetery. Dale E. Reedom, 49 of Gulfport, died September 11, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Lisa Reedom; three children, Dale Palode, Maurice Reedom, Johnnie Belinda Reedom; three sisters, Gloria Graham, Lillie Bankston, Doris Lewis; three grandchildren. Thensted, Jr. (Buddy), age 80, of Ocean Springs, MS died September 11, 2008. Mr. Thensted was born in Biloxi, MS on February 7, 1928, and spent most of his life there. Henry served in the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy from 1946-1951. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Walters Thensted, his father, Henry Charles Thensted, Sr., his sister, June Avrett. Burial: Old Biloxi City Cemetery. Sept. 12 Nadine (Leone) McNamara Clark died September 12, 2008, at age 60. Nadine was born May 4, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY. Nadine moved to the Gulf Coast in 1980. She spent most of her years on the Coast working for non-profit organizations such as The Gulf Coast Women's Center, The Back Bay Mission and the Biloxi VA Medical Center. A memorial service to celebrate Nadine's life will be at the Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, Biloxi, MS. Steve L. Holifield, age 54, of Gulfport, died September 12, 2008.Graveside service: Pine Ridge Gardens. Khadijah Qawiy, 33, of Gulfport, MS died September 12, 2008 in Detroit, MI. The memorial service was held at Lovett Funeral Home, in Mobile, AL on Monday, September 15. Malcolm T. Mallette, age 79, of Gulfport, MS, died September 12, 2008 in Mobile, AL. He was born in Lucedale, George County, MS, on Oct. 4, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vaudy P. and Gertrude Woodard Mallette; brother, John W. Mallette. Mr. Mallette graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1949 at the age of 19. He taught as the head of the Math Department in a Senior High School for 2 years. He joined the U.S. Air force for 2 plus years. After his required time in the service, he came back to the Gulfport/Biloxi area. Mr. Mallette began work with Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. He soon made electronic supervisor and spent 25 plus years, with many special commendations during his tenure. George County Funeral Home, Lucedale, MS is in charge of arrangements. Mark Leon Ruesing, age 43, of Gulfport, died Friday, September 12, 2008 in Gulfport. He was a native of St. Louis, MO. Mark served in the U.S. Coast. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Virginia Ruesing, and a brother, Robert Alexander Ruesing. Burial will take place in Ft. Worth, Texas. Eula W. Switzer, age 87, of Biloxi, MS, died Sept. 12, 2008. Born April 6, 1921, in Ocean Springs, MS to Walter "Red" Webb and Josephine Myers Webb. One of thirteen children, Eula attended Ocean Springs High School. Eula taught an adult Sunday school class for 43 years at Handsboro Baptist Church, Handsboro, MS. Mrs. Switzer joined the MS Gulf Coast Community College Board of Trustees in 1975 and served on the board for 29 years with the exception of 1986 and 1987, during which time she filled the remaining term of her husband on the Harrison County Board of Supervisors for District V. She was the College Board's first female chairperson and also served as first vice-chair, second vice chair and secretary. She received the distinguished Sam Owen Award in 2001 and the board elected to name the first building in honor of an individual at the Jefferson Davis Campus as the Eula W. Switzer Nursing and Allied Health Building. She was "Outstanding Mother of the Year Award" given to her by the Biloxi East Harrison County Lion's Club. She was active throughout the community in the Civitan Club, Gulf Coast Carnival Association, Altrussa, Beta Sigma Phi, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Real Granddaughter of the UDC, Amaranth, and Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. T. Switzer, Sr., parents, Walter and Josephine Myers of Ocean Springs, siblings, Hugh Webb, Tracey Webb, Sybil Beaugez, Audrey DeSilvey, Walter Webb, Carolyn Kiernan, Francis Webb, Priscilla Webb, Alice Webb, and her granddaughter, Ashleigh Humphreys. Burial: Floral Hills Cemetery. Emma G. Whitlock, 90, of Gulfport died Sept. 12, 2008. She was a member of Riley Chapel UM Church, Gulfport. Mrs. Whitlock was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Whitlock; parents; four sisters; and five brothers. She leaves five children; a brother; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren. He was born in Coffeeville, AL on January 12, 1938. A 1957 graduate of Central High School, Mobile, AL. He entered the United States Air Force in April of 1961. Throughout his 26 years of service he traveled the world and made many new friends. He started out in the rank of Airman Basic and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was the son of Bishop Eddie Harris, Jr. and Mother Crissie Goode Harris, who both preceded him in death and a brother, Joshua Goode. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery with full Military Honors. Gerald Lynn Jones, Sr., died September 13, 2008, born on August 4, 1942, in Greenville, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie and Louise Jones, formerly of Jackson, MS. He is survived by his wife, formerly of Gulfport, MS and recently residing in Tokyo, Japan; their two sons, three grandchildren, and his brother of Largo, FL. Angie Lizana, age 43, of Gulfport, MS, died September 13, 2008 in Gulfport. Burial: Wolf River Cemetery. Eugene Talmadge Oswalt, Jr., 52, of Biloxi died September 13, 2008 in Biloxi. Sept. 14 Michelle "Miki" Renee Andrews, 36, of Gulfport, died September 14, 2008 in Gulfport, MS. She is preceded in death by her mother, Carol L. Ogden. Burial will be private. Carrie Durr, 71, of Gulfport, MS died Sept. 14, 2008. Mrs. Durr was preceded in death by her husband, A.V. Durr; two children; and a great-grandchild. Gregory Huddleston, 56, of Gulfport died Sept. 14, 2008. Betty W. Koll, age 79, of Gulfport, died September 14, 2008 in Gulfport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Armand L. Koll; her daughter, Susan Harris; her parents, George Woodcock and Juanita F. Woodcock; a brother, John Woodcock; and two sisters, Joan Lesher and Jean Ferrill. Burial: Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens. Istvan Laki, 68, of Gulfport, MS died Sept. 14, 2008 in Gulfport. Private services were held. Willie King Martin, born in Lyman, MS, died September 14, 1913 in Hattiesburg, MS. Born to Payton C. and Rosa Damphman King. She was married to Calvin Martin, Sr. of Fernwood, MS for fifty-eight years. She was a Cafeteria Manager for Harrison County School System for 30 years and was a pioneer in her field, starting with cooking on a wood stove at Lyman School. She was preceded in death by her parents Payton C. King of Lyman, MS and Rosa Damphman King, her husband Calvin Martin, Sr., brothers Rufus and Walter King, sisters Nola Mae Long, Delphine Leuenberger, Bessie Wenger, and Mary Hackettt. Willie died September 14, 2008 in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, MS at the Hattiesburg Convalescent Center. She was a resident of the care center for eight years . A private service was held in Gulfport. Mrs. Diana Delores Tate, 48, of Gulfport, MS died September 14, 2008 in Gulfport. She was a member of The Anointed Temple AOH Church of God, Gulfport. She was also the owner of "Aunt Donna's Daycare & Learning Center". Interment: Pine Ridge Gardens. Sept. 15 Daniel Wilbur Brewer Jr., 73, a lifelong resident of the MS Gulf Coast, died Sept. 15, 2008. Dan was born on March 12, 1935. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty "Stormy" Brewer, his mother Myrtle B. Head and his father Daniel W. Brewer. Dan was a member of the Armed Forces and a veteran of the Korean War. He served in the Army, Navy and Marines. The family will hold a private memorial service. Heather Lifer, age 63, died September 15, 2008 in Palm Springs. CA. Heather was a native of the coast growing up in Gulfport and residing in Bay St. Louis. She moved to Palm Springs, CA and been residing there for the past ten years. She is preceded in death by her father Carl Lauffer. Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society of California. James O. McMurtray, 85, of Saucier died Sept. 15, 2008. Clifford Zeromski, age 79, of Saucier, died September 15, 2008, in Saucier. Sept. 16 Danny Glenn Bradley, 42, of Pass Christian, MS died September 16, 2008 in Pass Christian. Burial: St. Stephens Cemetery, Pass Christian. Thomas Chester Cobb, 77, of Perkinston, MS died September 16, 2008 in Biloxi. He was born in Fayette, MS and had been a resident of Perkinston for two and a half years. He served in the U.S. Army. Graveside service: Biloxi National Cemetery. Rhonda 'Gail' Welch Dickens, age 58 and a resident of Gulfport, MS died September 16, 2008 in Houston, TX. Mrs. Dickens was born on February 18, 1950 in Gulfport, to Ray and Opal Welch. Mrs. Dickens was a school teacher at Bayou View Elementary School in Gulfport for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray L. Welch. Funeral service: St. James Catholic Church. Michael Ellis Moses Sr. died Sept. 16, 2008. Service: St. George Orthodox Church. Burial: Cedar Hill Cemetery. Patricia "Patsy" Dufour Pizzetta, 71, of Biloxi, MS died September 16, 2008. She was born on February 18, 1937 in Magee, MS. She was co-owner of E.J. Pizzetta Mechanical Contractors in Biloxi for many years. Mrs. Pizzetta is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Pizzetta; parents, Oscar and Gertrude Dufour. Burial: Southern Memorial Park. Sept. 17 Faye Breland, age 50, a resident of Gulfport, MS died September 17, 2008 in Ocean Springs. She was born in Wiggins, Stone County, MS. She was preceded in death by her father, Covert Devone Breland; and two brothers, Allen Breland and Alvin Breland. Gravesite Service: Ten Mile Cemetery in Stone County. Florence Williams Jourdan died September 17, 2008. She was born on June 30, 1932 in Handsboro, MS, but was raised by Helen and Alvin "Nook" Jackson. She was preceded in death by her son, John Robert; her parents; her brothers: Edgar White Jr., James Williams, Marshall Williams, and Elic Williams; her sisters: Carrie Goode, Lillian Holmes, and Berdell Barney. Mr. Lotz was sent from the Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport, to Millet-Guidry F.H. in LaPlace, LA. Joshua Andrew Martin, of Gulfport, MS, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 in Gulfport at the age of 33. He was preceded in death by his father and paternal grandparents. Mrs. Donna Lee Ross Scheid, age 69, resident of Long Beach, MS died September 17, 2008, in Gulfport. Donna was born June 25, 1939, in Dunbar, WV to the late Harold and Lucille Ross. Her family heritage dates back to Betsy Ross, who sewed the first American flag. Mrs. Scheid was a great niece, several times removed. She was married December 22, 1962 to Donald Joseph Scheid. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Betsy Ross Montgomery. Burial: Long Beach City Cemetery. Sept. 18 William Breazeale Jr., 77, of Gulfport, MS died Sept. 18, 2008. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery. SMSGT Carl Eugene Homan, USAF Retired, 79, of Gulfport, MS died September 18, 2008, in Mobile, AL. Mr. Homan dedicated 26 years of his life serving his country around the world, but he was also a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Homan was born May 11, 1929, in Aaronsburg, PA. He enlisted in the Air Force, married and settled with his family in Gulfport. He retired while stationed at Keesler Air Force Base. Preceded in death by his father, Roy Jacob Homan; mother Mary Winkelbecht Homan Long; first wife, Louise Morgan Homan, brothers, Robert Homan, Leonard Homan and Donald Homan. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery. James H. Hood, age 71, resident of Gulfport, MS, died September 18, 2008, in Gulfport. Mr. Hood was born in Monroe County, MS. He was in the ROTC at MSU and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army before retiring from the MS National Guard after 23 years, achieving the rank of Lt. Col. He was preceded in death by his father, Halbert Ray Hood, and his sister, Louise Farrell. Funeral services: First Baptist Church of Gulfport, Highway 605. Burial will be in Amory, after services at Pickle Funeral Home. Mrs. Bertha Lepre, 78, a Biloxi native, formerly of North Biloxi until the retirement from the Air Force of her now deceased husband, Roy Lepre (1996), also a Biloxi native. Died September 18, 2008 in McDonough, GA, her home for the past three years. She was a member of the Keesler AFB Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Lepre was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lepre, parents, Evelyn Barras Hollier and Lucien Hollier, and her sister, Margaret Hollier Delahousey. A committal service with family members will be held at the Biloxi National Cemetery where Mrs. Lepre will be interred next to her husband. Sept. 26 Mrs. Myrta Armstead Deatherage, 89, of Biloxi, MS died September 26, 2008 in Hattiesburg, MS. Myrta was born in Cheshire, CT. In 1942, Myrta married James Walsh. They were married two years when he was killed in France during WWII. She arrived in Honolulu by ship in 1951, where soon after her arrival she opened her own dance studio in Waikiki, next to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. On November 11, 1955, she married George Deatherage at the King Street Congregational Church in Honolulu, Hawaii. They eventually moved to Alaska. After George died in 2002, she moved to Biloxi to be near her son, Roy, of Gulfport. Mrs. Deatherage will be interred in the Makiki Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii. Julia "Judy" Ann Gleghorn Fischer, age 60 and a resident of Gulfport, died September 26, 2008, in Gulfport, MS. Mrs. Fischer was a native of Walnut Ridge, AR, and was a member of Mississippi City United Methodist Church in Gulfport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Gleghorn. Mrs. Shirley Jacquet Ouille, 76, of Ponchatoula, LA, born November 2, 1931, died September 26, 2008, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond, LA. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Biloxi, MS, and a graduate of Biloxi High School. Mrs. Ouille was preceded in death by her parents, Albert L. Sept. 27 Edward Bradley Childress, died September 27, 2008; was born to Edward Bradley Childress and Lela Robinson Childress on February 2, 1916, in Flora, Mississippi. The youngest of seven children. He graduated from Flora High School in 1936. Ed was drafted into the US Army and was assigned to General George Patton's 2nd Armored Division at Fort Benning, Georgia. Just prior to being deployed to Northern Africa with General Patton, he received orders to attend officer training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was promoted to Warrant Officer. From June through December, 1945, Ed was assigned to the Asia/Pacific Theater as part of the occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged from the Army in February, 1946, and returned home to MS. He entered the US Army in 1961 and after a tour in Vietnam in 1963, he joined the US Navy Reserve where he retired as Chief Warrant Officer 04 in 1997.
