The first paper established in Raymond was the People’s Echo; then came the Times; then the Comet; then the South-Western Farmer in 1841. The No. of the Farmer before us shows that N.G. North was editor and proprietor, with John Jenkins associate editor. It contains a call for a Planter’s State Convention at Jackson, Nov. 8th, 1842; also gives notice of a State Agricultural Fair at Jackson, the 9th, 10th, and 11th days of November; also announces the Jefferson College Agricultural Fair, at Washington, Adams county, the 29th of October; also contains the by-laws of the Mississippi State Agricultural Society. The people of Mississippi were certainly more given to Agricultural Fairs and Societies at that time (39 years ago) than now. The Farmer contains a list of letters remaining at the Raymond Postoffice for three months, uncalled for, which numbers about 200. There was then a race track and Jocky Club at Dillons, six miles west of Raymond, known as Oakland course, near where the town of Oakley is now located. Henry Smith was then tax-collector of Hinds county, and Joshua Mullen, Ranger; G.W. Osborn, C. Vanderpool, B.S.Whiting, G.W. Gibbs, M. Mason, Cahn & Myers, were the merchants of Raymond, and Jackson, had south down sheep and berkshire pigs for sale. Hinds county then had 1863 white polls, Additional Comments: Gillespie Collection Scrapbook File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ms/hinds/photos/1842hind2580gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/msfiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
