J. A. Smith is very prominently urged by the Press of the State for Superintendent of Education. If any one has claims upon the people, surely he has. A graduate of West Point, he entered the Confederate service, and bravely and valiantly fought through the struggle, coming out, like some others, with nothing but his honor. Our citizens knew him first as principal of one of the best schools Raymond ever had, and latterly, as editor of the Brandon Republican. In all these positions he sustained his character as a gentleman- man—with high literary attainments, and honest in all his dealings.
