J. CHAPMAN, - - We regret to announce the death of this gentleman, for about thirty-five years a citizen of this town or immediate vicinity. He died, rather suddenly, on Saturday last, but had been in bad health for a considerable time. Mr. Chapman came to Raymond, from Tennessee, at an early period, and his fortunes have continuously been identified with the town and neighborhood. Here he married, and reared a large family of children, many of whom remained around him to the day of his death. Mr. Chapman was more fortunate in gaining the public heart, and retaining a place there, than any man we have known in the county, during our almost thirty years residence. We found him in public office when we first came to the county, and from that period to the day of his death he held public station almost continuously — never having been defeated for any office whatever before the people, although often a candidate against men of great strength. At the time of his death he was County Administrator, an appointment received from the Chancery Court. Mr. Chapman was ever a faithful and correct public officer,a kind-hearted and courteous gentleman, an obliging and attentive neighbor, and a good citizen. He was carried to the village grave-yard on Sunday last, and buried with Masonic honors by Raymond Lodge of F. and A. Masons, of which he was a member. Peace to his ashes.
