DILLON Last Saturday night at about 10 o’clock Mr. W.P. Dillon died suddenly, but peacefully, after several months of failing health at the age of 79 years. In passing of Mr. Dillon, another landmark, a gentlemen of the old school, a citizen of the highest type, a noble Christian man has gone to his reward. He was one of the braves old heroes to whom we all love to pay honor, and had just returned from the reunion at Chattanooga, where he answered the last roll call of the “old boys” in grey. Mr. Dillon was formerly a Louisiana sugar planter at or near Jeanerette. A dozen or more years ago he closed out his interests in Louisiana and came to Jefferson County, this state, where he purchased a plantation near Harriston, and which he owned and operated up to his death. He was three times married, his last two wives (Miss Lydia Gibbs) survives him. He never had any children, but reared a daughter of his brother, who called him Papa. Mr. Dillon was a quiet, peaceable man of dignified bearing, unobtrusive in manner and upright in character. While his residence in Raymond dates back only a half dozen years, he had formed some good friendships, and won the esteem and respect of all who knew him. The funeral took place Monday morning, services being held at the home and concluded at the cemetery, conducted by his pastor Rev. Mr. Fikes, of the Methodist Church. Despite the rainy inclement weather a large number of friends and connections followed the remains to their last resting place. At the conclusion of the burial ceremonies, his mound was literally covered with beautiful flowers. To the widow, friends and relatives of the deceased, the Gazette extends much sympathy in this their hour of sorrow.
