Goodwin. A telegram received Tuesday conveyed the sad intelligence that John L. Goodwin had died the night previous, of consumption, at his home near Mayersville, where he had been living for a number of years. Wednesday night his remains were brought to this place, and were yesterday afternoon tenderly laid to rest in Odd Fellows’ cemetery, almost within sound of the voices of those he knew in youth and loved in manhood. At the time of death, John Goodwin was about 40 years old, and a man of striking individuality. Possessed of a good common school education, with a mind naturally bright and active, and a heart ever warm and generous, but never impulsive, it was natural he should always be companionable. While having decided opinions on questions of passing interest, he rarely discussed them in a way to antagonize or wound the feelings of those who differed from him. In this way he won and retained the friendship of all who came in contact with him. About ten years ago he married Miss Fatie, daughter of Mr. George Herrington, formerly of this place; and a few years later moved to Issaquena county, filling the responsible place of manager on one of the largest plantations in the rich Mississippi bottom. By his marriage he was blessed with three children, who with their mother live to mourn the great loss sustained by his death. May the Father in his goodness give them strength to temper their grief, and bring solace and comfort to their aching hearts; and may the blow that falls on the whitened head of his venerable parents, be softened by the thought that the son had been all a father could wish, and that he died with hope of a home in the kingdom above.
