Mr. James Masterson Passed Away Last Saturday. After an illness of more than a year, Mr. James Masterson, aged 78, one of Raymond’s oldest citizens passed away last Saturday afternoon at 7 o’clock, at the old Futch home. His remains were laid to rest in the Confederate Cemetery at 10 o’clock Sunday morning, the funeral service being conducted by Rev. R. J. Cumpston, of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Masterson was a valiant Confederate soldier, having been a member of Co. B. 22nd Mississippi Regiment, known as the Hinds Light Guards, until he was wounded in battle, after which he was transferred to cavalry service. The few survivors of his company who live to testify say he made a model soldier – one of the bravest in the state. Mr. Masterson leaves no relatives in the South, having come here alone from New York before the war; and since the war he has lived in the family of Mr. J. M. Futch up to the time of the latter’s death about four years ago, since when he has remained with the Futch family, where he had received the best of care up to the time of his death. For several months, in consequence of his ill health, his mind had been deranged, and his death, while not unexpected, has touched a tender spot in the hearts of those who have known him in his best days; and his comrades, with whom he fought valiantly for the “Lost Cause.” realize again that their number is growing less.
