On Tuesday last there was laid to rest in the Raymond cemetery the remains of John Shelton, Esq., the oldest citizen of the town and one of the most distinguished lawyers of the county. He received a fall on Friday last which was followed by fever and delirium and on Monday morning he died. Mr. Shelton came to Raymond from Louis county, Va., in 1837 and has ever since been a resident of the town with the exception of perhaps two or three years. He devoted his life to the law and has enjoyed a large practice. Mr. Shelton was a conscientious and honorable gentlemen and a useful citizen. The funeral service was conducted at the family residence by Rev. F.L. Allen, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and the remains were followed to the cemetery by a large concourse of friends. Mr. Shelton leaves two sons, J.M. Shelton, Esq., his law partner of this place and William Shelton of Memphis, Tenn. To the bereaved family we extend our sympathy.
