W.D. SMITH Capt. W.D. Smith, an old and highly esteemed citizen of the county, died at Edwards on the 14th inst., after a protractive illness. Mr. Smith was born in Madison county Dec. 13th, 1820, and moved to the neighborhood of Edwards when a small boy and resided there continuously to the time of his death, except three years in Raymond, from 1885 to 1888. Mr. Smith was a typical Southern gentleman of the old school. He was a member of the Methodist church and was for many years an officer in the church and superintendent of the Sunday school. He married Miss Jannette E. Cook, a sister of Mrs. W.T. Ratliff of this place. His wife survives him and there are also children and grand children to mourn his loss.
