 Hinds County Gazette 

Old man James Smothers, a venerable
colored citizen of the Edwards neighborhood,
died one day last week at the advanced
age of almost 90 years.  He left a large
family of children and grandchildren.  He
was considered by both black and white as
an excellent citizen, and had accumulated
considerable property, consisting of lands,
stock, etc.
