It has Iron front, plate glass windows, and is elaborately finished, both inside and out. The builder of the fine store was Mr. George W. Gibbs, a princely merchant, who came from Virginia. He began business as agent For a Mr. Ish, also a Virginian, first locating at Raymond and afterwards at U tica. Returning to Raymond, he opened a mercantile establishment Upon his own account, and in a few years amassed a fortune. The store- House is constructed in two departments, with second story and cellar to each. The largest of the two rooms is 200 feet long and the smaller 150 feet long. It was erected before the was of secession, the founda- tion being laid in 1858, and the building completed two years later. The contractors were the Weldons, the same who built the courthouse. When first occupying his new storehouse Mr. Gibbs placed in it a stock of goods valued at $75,000. Supplying numerous plantations, worked by thou- sands of slaves, he had an annual business of fully a quarter of a million dollars. About the same time he also erected a brick residence at a cost of $12,000. The storehouse and residence are now the property of his daughters, Miss Lydia Gibbs and Mrs. Annie Dillon.
