A sketch of Raymond and its institutions would not be complete without mention of Mr. T.D. McManus. Mr. McManus is a native of Ireland, having been born in County Conan in the year 1865. He came direct from the old country to Raymond in 1890, making his home for ten years with his uncle, P. J. Dolan, Esq., and assisting in the management of his store. In 1899 he was married to Miss Louise Spengler, of Jackson (a relative of the Spenglers who are proprietors of the famous Cooper’s Well), and has one child. He began merchandising for him self in a small way in 1901, and has by his energy, talent and industry built up a business which is now very profitable. Besides his mercantile interests, Mr. McManus has a peach orchard from which he makes large shipments every season. Mr. McManus is proprietor of the famous old “Oak Tree Hotel,” where S.S. Prentiss, Andrew Jackson, Jefferson Davis and other illustrious statesmen were entertained in antebellum days. A few years ago the old building seemed to be going to ruin, but Mr. McManus purchased it, and, making improvements, he has converted it into a nice home. Having many excellent qualities of mind and heart, Mr. McManus has made many friends since coming here. He is a member of the Catholic Church, but is not at all bigoted in his religion, having the true Christian spirit of liberality towards those of different faith. Mr. McManus is a public-spirited and useful citizen, and if we had more like him it would be the better for the town and community.
