The Oak Tree Hotel, built around 1850, was a popular hotel with politicians 
and lawyers.  Two of the Inn’s most prominent guests were Andrew Jackson and 
Sergeant Prentiss.  Prentiss delivered his famous speech, “In Defense of a 
Bedbug,” during one stay there.



T.D. McManus opened a Gen. Merchandise Store in a section of the old Oak Tree 
Hotel.
