Horton wphor@sbcglobal.net Itawamba County, Mississippi Deed Records - Book 8, page 182 This Indenture made and entered into this the twenty- thired day of March, one thousand eight hundred and fifty between JOHN RAINS and UNITY RAINS his wife of the first part and LABAN THOMAS of the second part all of the State of Mississippi and County of Itawamba witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred fifty dollars to us the said JOHN and UNITY RAINS in hand recept [sic] whereof is hereof is hereby acknowledged have this day Bargained Sold in fee of and by these presents doeth bargain sell and convey unto the said LABAN THOMAS a certain tract or parcel of land to wit the West half of the north east quarter of Section Nine in Township Seven Range Six East containing Eighty acres it lying and being in the State and County afforesaid [sic] the same to have and to hold the above described parcel of Land together with all the woods ways and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to the only proper of him the said LABAN THOMAS his heirs and assigns forever and we the said party of the first part for ourselves our heirs and assigns doth warrant and defend the Rite [sic] and title against the claim or claims of every person or persons claiming to the said the same to said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever in witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seal the day and date above writin [sic]. LINDSEY Justice of the Peace for said County personally appeared JOHN RAINS whose name appears to the within deed and acknowledged that he signed sealed and delivered said deed on the day and year and for the purposes therein mentioned as his act and own voluntary act and deed and also UNITY RAINS wife of the said JOHN RAINS whose name also appears to said deed and upon a private examination separate and aprt from her said husband acknowledged that she signed sealed and delivered said deed as her own voluntary act and did freely without any threats fear or compulsion of her said husband in Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this May the 18th day AD 1850. MOORE Clerk Transcriber's Note: JOHN and UNITY (BAILEY) RAINS were my great-great grandparents who were originally from Johnston County, North Carolina, leaving there in the mid 1830's, stopping for a while in 1840 in Cherokee County, Alabama, before settling in the Itawamba County, Mississippi, area in the mid-to-late 1840's.
