She began volunteering with the Ocean Springs Hospital Auxiliary in 1977 and logged over 7000 hours serving in the ospital gift shop. John was born on May 10, 1929 in Birmingham, AL. He was retired from the City of Moss Point, where he served as the recreation director. John organized the pee wee football, basketball, and softball leagues as well many other programs for the youth of Moss Point and Jackson County. He was very active in all aspects of Moss Point Athletics. He served as an alderman for two terms. He also served as the Civil Defense Director for Moss Point. John was instrumental in designing and developing the Veteran's Memorial on the Moss Point Riverfront as well as organizing the annual veteran's day parade. He was a proud veteran, serving with the United States Marine Corps where he received the Purple Heart Citation and Medal during the Korean Conflict. Henry "Captain Red" Wieniewitz, 92, of Biloxi, MS, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 in Ocean Springs, MS. Mr. Wieniewitz was born on January 19, 1919, in Pass Christian, MS, the first of five children born to William Vinn and Antonia Onheiser Wieniewitz. He was baptized at Nativity Cathedral in Biloxi and was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moss Point, MS. This son of a fisherman loved the Gulf, the salt air, and being behind the Captain's wheel. His mariner life began as a deckhand on the shrimp and oyster schooners of Biloxi at the young age of 14. At 19, he took pride in his new title of Captain Red and his first shrimp boat, The Lanny Boy, working for Biloxi's Southern Shell Shrimp Factory. He later captained in the oil industry running crew, supply, and research vessels along coastal MS, LA, and TX and spent many summers as Captain on the Pan American and Pan American Clipper excursions to Ship Island. Captain Red and his "hon"," Cecelia Gladys Landry, were married in Biloxi on February 14, 1938. They were blessed with four daughters and three sons, and a host of precious grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. Moss Point was home for 47 years, until moving back to Biloxi in 2010, where the last Wieniewitz Thanksgiving gathering numbered over 85.
