Mrs. Doris Jean (Thompson) Hooks, 76, born in Parks, AR., a resident of Gautier, MS passed away September 1, 2009. Preceded in death by her parents, Clifton R. and Bygie S. Thompson; husband, Marvin Denver Hooks; and son, Cecil Hooks. A memorial service will be held at Martin Bluff Baptist Church, Gautier. Sept. 2 Ms. Felecia Gaines, 45, a resident of Ocean Springs, died September 2, 2009 in Ocean Springs, MS. Beatrice Taylor, 82, a native of Arkansas and a resident of Ocean Springs died September 2, 2009, in Ocean Springs. Preceded in death by her husband, Coy Taylor, son, Bobby Taylor, Sr., parents, Russell and Mary Hooper Robinson, sister, Gladys Campbell brother, R.F. Robinson and two grandsons, Bobby Taylor Jr. and Andrew M. Goodwin. She was born in Sardis, MS to Louis & Octa Clark Herron. She owned and operated Ola's Snowballs for many years. She was the owner of Savannah’s Florist in Grand Bay, AL. Preceded in death by her father, George Loper. Serene Memorial Gardens Daniel L. Wells "Captain Dan", passed away September 25, 2009. He was born January 16, 1922 in Three Rivers, MS, he was the son of the late Honor and Vassie Wells. In 1937, Captain Dan was pinned as the first African American Deputy Sheriff of Jackson County, Mississippi. According to a reputable newspaper article, he is presumably the first black law officer in Mississippi and maybe the South. Simultaneously, Captain Dan worked for the International Paper Company and as a Deputy Sheriff for over 60 years. He is survived by his children,; 30 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, brothers, nieces, nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Marion Wells, daughters, Judy Anderson and Bessie Reynolds, granddaughters, Theresa Anderson and Lithia "Rose" Hobbs and brother Dr. Lonnie L. Wells. Mr. Petrick was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. and Mary Petrick.
