April 1963 -  USS Thresher Disaster
John Davis Shafer was born on August 6, 1929, died April 1963 in the disaster 
of the USS Thresher. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil D. (Connie Pendarvis) 
Shafer; parents are formerly from Jackson County, MS. On September 2, 1961, 
John was assigned as a crewmember of the USS Thresher, where he joined his 
brother, Benjamin Nathan Shafer. 

John is survived by four sons, John Jr.; Jeff, Joseph, and James Shafer; a 
brother, Joseph Shafer of Bath, Ohio; and three sisters, Mrs. F.G. Watson of 
Mobile, Ala.; Mrs. David Main of North Stonington, Conn., and Mrs. Clyde Phelps 
of Gale's Ferry, Conn. 

Preceding him in death are his great-grandparents: John W. Jones and Anne 
(Kennedy) Jones;  grandparents, Joseph James Pendarvis and Mary E. (Jones) 
Pendarvis; Aunt Jenny Jones Lopez Smith;  Uncles Allen Pendarvis and J. 
Pendarvis; all of Escatawpa, Jackson County, MS.
