Mr. Wood was the son of the late George Price Wood and Mary Alethea Gregory Wood. He was the great- nephew of Charles Henry Wood, the first mayor of Moss Point, and the great-grandson of the Honorable George Wood, who served as district attorney for Jackson County, MS and later as chancellor judge in the late 1800's. He served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He returned home after the war to join with T.L. "Pete" Delashment, Jr. to run the Moss Point Insurance Agency, a company started by their fathers. He married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Ryder. Their marriage lasted for over 60 years until her death in 2005. Bert Wood was vitally interested in Moss Point and Jackson County, serving on numerous boards and committees dedicated to the improvement of the area. He was very instrumental in obtaining the federal funds for the Escatawpa River Bridge and for the widening of Main Street in Moss Point. He served for several years on the board of directors for Hancock Bank. He was an active member of Moss Point Presbyterian Church for many years, and more recently a member of First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula, Miss. As evidence of his devotion to the city and county, he was awarded the Lifetime Community Service Award by the Young Men's Business Club in 1995. Whenever one of us nephews or nieces returned home for a visit, he went out of his way to entertain us with a fishing trip, a boat ride or a seafood dinner with his special gumbo. He was more like a brother to us rather than an uncle. He was a very caring man who loved his family and his community, according to Dr. Gene Wood of Jackson, Miss. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ryder Wood; his parents; his brothers, George P. Wood Jr. and Gregory Wood; and sister, Mary Edwina Wood Chappell. A graveside service will be held at Griffin Cemetery of Moss Point with Rev. Maynor of Birmingham officiating.
