M., Mrs. BETTIE BROUGHTON, wife of W. H. Broughton, aged 38 years, 7 months, 17 days. Mrs. Broughton was born in the city of Baltimore in 1832, was baptized when a child in the Episcopal Church, and was educated in the schools of her native city. Married in 1859, she came with her husband to Rodney, Miss., where she lived until her decease. Two years since she was confirmed, together with her husband, in the Episcopal Church and was from that time a consistent and exemplary member of that communion. She leaves two interesting boys, of nearly two and ten years of age, respectively, as a precious legacy of affection to heart-broken husband. Of charming simplicity and sweetness of manner, and elegance of person, and of an accomplished mind, she became, after her removal to the South, the centre and ornament of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Her home was the abode of taste and refinement, and by the tone of high sentiment and tender sympathy which she diffused around her, she made it one of the choicest households in our community. Although devotedly attached to the Episcopal Church, she embraced all who were called by the name of Christ within the range of her interest and regard; often welcomed and entertained clergymen of other denominations as well as her own, at her hospitable mansion, and was ready to lend a helping hand to every religious body in the community. Faithful in all the relations of life and consecrated in heart to God, we feel that death had no sad significance for her but was the gateway through which she passed into mansions of eternal rest. Her last illness was very painful and! protracted, and though it was felt for some time that she could not survive, yet it is hard to realize that she has indeed gone from us--that one so estimable and generally beloved, apparently full of life and the promise of life, should in the full vigor and beauty of a noble womanhood, fall a prey to the ruthless destroyer. But God's thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are His ways our ways, but thanks be to Him, they are not ours, because they are higher and better than ours. W.F.B.
