THE LAUREL LEDGER - September 21, 1906

A very serious and distressing accident happened at Summerland Saturday when Dan
Valentine had an arm caught and drawn to the shoulder of the gin. It seems that s
certain belt had slipped from its place and Valentine was trying to replace it.
By some means or other the hand was caughtand the whole arm terribly sawn and
lacerated. It was 20 minutes or more before he could be taken out. A surgeon was
quickly called and the torn and bleeding arm was taken off but the poor man died
about 5 o'clock. He leaves a wife and four children and a host of friends to mourn
his loss
