April 14, 1905 Our little town has not yet recovered from the excitement of the explosion of the switch engine which occurred last Saturday afternoon, killing Engineer Humphries and Conductor Felix Daugherty, and seriously wounding Fireman Davis. The explosion is said to be by experts one of the worst that ever occurred. The body of Mr. Humphries was thrown 160 yards from the engine and had he not struct the cross arms of a telegraph pole, it would have possibly gone twice this distance. Our people sympathize deeply with the bereaved families in the loss of their loved ones. Services were conducted at the Methodist church last Sunday by the Rev. Mr. Vann, this being the first sermon preached by him on his new work, he having been recently sent to this circuit. His sermons, both morning and night, were able and pleading. Hereafter there will be a prayer meeting every Wednesday night at 8:00 o'clock and all are urged to attend. Messrs. J. N. Roberts, A. C. Pettus and J. E. McIlwain were visitors to COlumbus last week on business. Mr. S. B. Gilespie (spelling copied exact) has been sent here to run the switch engine, to fill the vacancy caused by this deplorable tragedy of last Saturday. Mr. T. E. Dismukes, Jr., who has been night hostler for the past year at this place, has been promoted to position of Fireman on the Montgomery District. Mr. Will L. Cook spent Sunday in Columbus visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cook. Mr. S. H. Gossett, our affable R. R. Agent, has been on the sick list fotr the past few days, but is now able to be out again. Miss Sallie Lou Cook of Columbus is the charming guest of Dr. R. L. H. Cook's family. Miss Daisy Locke, of Columbus, Miss., is visiting the family of W. J. Locke. Mr. J. H. Davis, who has been check clerk for the M. & O. here for the past year, has resigned, and gone into the mercantile business at Starkville, Miss., and has been succeeded by Mr. Porter of Waynesboro, Miss. The new store building of Dr. Cook is now under mode of construction and will be completed within the next few days. Mr. H. A. Moody and Miss Lucile McCann were quietly married at the residence of the bride's parents at Oktoc, Miss. last Wednesday, April 12th. The happy pair immediately left for Meridian, Miss., their future home. Lowndes Lodge No. 171, K. of P., will meet in regular session next Wednesday night business of importance will be transacted, and all members are urged to be present. Visiting brothers cordially invited.
