She departed this life on January 28, 1975 in the Oktibbeha County Hospital. Mrs. Lyde was a lifelong citizen of Lowndes County where she served and led a life that was dedicated to Chriatian service and public education. At an early age, Mrs Lyde, then Augusta Wicks,confessed a hope in Christ and joined the New Zion Baptist Church and remained faithful with service and support until death. For many years, she was very active in the Mount Olivet Association in which she held various key postions for the advancement of education. In her civic work, she was a member of the Heriones of Jericho, active in Civil Rights movements and gave untiring serive in educating other children at her own time and expense. Her initial education began in the public schools of Lowndes County and continued to Mary Holmes High School and Junior College. Upon completion of her education at Mary Holmes Junior College, she returned to Lowndes County and served throughout until she became incapcitated by ill health. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Clara Rupert of Tupelo, MS; seven brothers, Aaron Wicks, Zack Wicks and Ellus Wicks or Artesia, MS; Odis Wicks of Starkville, MS; Coleman and Joesph Wicks of East St. Louis, IL and Alonzo Wicks of Indianapolis, IN and a host of other relatives and friends.
