This file was compiled and contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Pat Wellington *************************************************************************** Location: Take highway 22 out of Canton, turn right on Virlilia Road go 3.0 miles to the intersection of Patrick Road turn right on Patrick Road, go 3.0 miles on Patrick Rd to the intersection of Mt. Elam Road, turn left on Mt. Elam Road the cemetery is located 2.1 miles down on the right hand side of the road on a knoll and in a grove of trees. The cemetery is about 75 yards off the road. Copied from inventories given to Canton Library, Madison Co., Miss. and are on file there. This is an old family cemetery dating back to as early as 1838. The cemetery is in a bad state of repair, so is difficult to see from the fence beside the road. Note: This cemetery was again found by Walter W. Wellington July 29, 1995 and the directions given to it's location. Note: It appears that this cemetery was inventoried some time ago and identified as the Leggitt Cemetery., however in cross checking it is also known (or was assigned) the name Sander/Saunders. Leggitt Leggitt Ann Maria Daughter of Jane Sanders and John W. Leggitt. Leggitt Elizabeth Jane Daughter of Mary Maria Sanders and Absalom Leggitt Leggitt Esther Aged 70 years (Must have been born circa 1769) Probably mother of Absalom Leggitt who married Maray Marian Sanders. Leggitt William Hamilton Son of Mary Maria Sanders and Absalom Leggitt Passmore Ellis Pusey Son of Hester Ann Sanders and Dr. Ellis Pusey Passmore Ratcliff Samual C. Note: Either could not or did not read the dates, if there were any. A masonic insignia is on the stone. A letter to Richard Campbell Saunders from Hugh Sanders, mentions a Mr Ratcliff. Could have been a friend of the family. Probably was the Russell Thomas Note: This man lived in the area of the Sander/Saunders family. T.R. is listed as an overseer in the 1850 census, perhaps he worked for the Sanders/Saunders. Sanders Hugh Father of Mary Maria, Hester AA, Jane and Richard Campbell Sanders/Saunders Sanders Nepcy Campbell Note: Believed to be buried in this but with no markers. Mother of Mary Maria, Hester Ann, Richard Campbell and Jane Sanders. There is a grave beside Hugh Sanders' grave that has an identical brick covering on it as Hugh's, but there is no Saunders Ellen Maria Lewis Note: She is believed to buried in this but there is no marker to indicate this. Since she died during the War Between the States, a tombstone was probably not available. I am reasonably certain that she was buried here. Saunders George Montgomery Note: It is believed that she was buried in this, however there is no tombstone to indicate this but since she died during the War Between the States a tombstone would not have been available. Since he died just after the War Between the States a tombstone would not have been available.
