Will of Henry A. Offutt, Madison Co., MS, Will Book A Considering the shortness of time, the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof I, Henry A Offutt formerly of Montgomery County and State of Maryland, but at present a citizen of Madison County and State of Mississippi, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following. First. I give and bequeath to the members of the Regular Medical profession of the neighborhood in which I shall die my body to be dissected as minutely as they may deem proper and after retaining such part or parts (of such thereto) as they may think worth preserving, the residue of the remains to be decently as may be placed in a coffin and committed to the earth. Item. I give and bequeath unto my brother Basil Z. Offutt formerly of Montgomery County and State of Maryland but at this time a citizen of Audrain County and State of Missouri five hundred dollars to be paid out of such means as may be raised out of notes and accounts due me or from the proceeds of property sold. Also to the said Basil Z. Offutt my gold watch, chains and keys. Item. I give and bequeath unto my friend John Cooper of Camden, Madison County, and State of Mississippi five hundred dollars to be paid out of such means as may be collected on notes and accounts due me or from the proceeds of property sold. Item. I give and bequeath unto my old friend Miss Elizabeth Hunter of Montgomery County and State of Maryland (who, for a number of years resided in my father’s and afterwards my mother’s family) two hundred dollars. Item. I give unto my friends William Sutherland and William C. Dear both of Madison County and State of Mississippi the medical portion of my library, likewise the skeletons and such anatomical preparations as I have, to be equally divided between them as may be convenient. Item. I devise and bequeath all the rest and residue of my estate including real, personal and mixed unto my beloved mother Eleanor N. Offutt formerly of Montgomery County and State of Maryland but at present residing in Washington County and State of Maryland to her and her heirs and assigns forever. It is my wish that my servants be at liberty to choose whether they will remain in the State of Mississippi and be sold or go to the State of Missouri or wherever else my mother the said Eleanor N. Offutt may wish to have them taken. And if they prefer being sold that husband and wife or mother and child or children be not separated in the sale. It is further my special will and wish that for and in consideration of the great services and labors rendered me by my sorrel riding horse branded on the left shoulder “S” and marked by a large scar in front of his right shoulder that he not be sold but that my mother the said Eleanor N. Offutt take charge of him. That he be kindly treated and not abused, and when he dies that he be buried in the earth. In case the said Eleanor N. Offutt die before the above described horse, that he be __ and __ by my younger brother the said Basil Z. Offutt who will carry out the above provisions set above to said horse. I do hereby constitute and appoint my brother the said Basil Z. Offutt and my friend the said John Cooper my sole executors of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 19th day of April in the year of Our Lord eighteen hundred and forty three. /s/ Henry A. Offutt Signed sealed and published and declared by Henry A. Offutt the above named testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto.
