Monroe, Lee and Itawamba Counties. Population, 1900 - 66,716. ROBERT E. HOUSTON, of Aberdeen, was born May 27, 1839, at Madisonville, Monroe County, Tenn. He is the son of Joseph E. Houston and wife, Eliza (Hairne) Houston. His ancestors were Irish Covenanters, and emigrated to America in 1645 and settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The father of the subject of this sketch served his county as sheriff for twelve years, Circuit Clerk for eight years and Clerk and Master for twenty-seven years; died in 1902 at the advanced age of ninety-two years. Mr. Houston attended the "Old Field" schools and Hiwassee College, Monroe County, Tenn.; entered the Law School at Cumberland University and was graduated December 12, 1860; located at Aberdeen, Miss., January, 1861, for the practice of law; enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company I, Eleventh Mississippi Regiment; afterwards served as Captain under Adjutant-General and Inspector-General; surrendered at Washington, Ga., June 27, 1865; County Attorney of Monroe County, 1868, 1869; represented Monroe County in the House of Representatives, sessions of 1884, 1896, 1900; elected to State Senate from the Thirty-eighth District to succeed W. B. Walker, deceased, March 5, 1904. Mr. Houston is a Democrat; member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church, and is a Mason; was married March 20, 1871, at Columbus, Miss., to Mary Weaver, who died January 1, 1885; was married December 20, 1890, at Aberdeen, Miss., to Mrs. H. E. Stoddard. Mr. Houston has one living child, Joseph E., who is the junior member of the law firm Houston & Houston, of Aberdeen, miss., of which Robert E. Houston is senior member.
