Shropshire Alabama burial of MS native, Noxubee County, MS Submitted by Bryan Worthington This man was born in Noxubee County Miss. and apparantly migrated to and married here in Centre, Al. Unfortunatly the name of the County is mis-spelled on the stone----they spelled it knoxubee. The man and his wife founded The Coosa River News which was our first newspaper. The tombstones are of beautiful white marble with raised letters. The inscription for father and mother is on the same piece of marble which is mounted on a common base. There is no sign of lechens, moss, or dirt on the stone----I don't believe I've ever seen more beautiful marble. There are five graves all together which bear the family name------Here goes-- Mother and father are on the same piece of marble with raised margins seperating the two inscriptions----On the left is MOTHER, arched across the top and the name Mary Vincon Shropshire, Born in Centre Al. November 30, 1852. Died November 23, 1899. On the right is FATHER-arched across the top and below is William Henry Shropshire, Born in Noxubee Co. Miss., Dec. 27, 1843, Died in Centre, August 19, 1893. Below the inscriptions, across the width of the entire stone is engraved--Founders of The Coosa River News. There are three more graves of Shropshire men---probably sons, two born the same day, twins no less, and the third man who died in 1955 was a WW I veteran. A fourth grave is probably a daughter-in-law, the middle name is Shropshire.
