To mail, the letter was addressed on the last page, then folded in thirds left to right, thirds top to bottom. There is no evidence of wax seal. The letter has several holes where text is completely missing. Other smaller holes left enough of the word to figure it out. Brackets show words partly missing and words not quite readable. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation is shown as written.) PAGE ONE, when letter is opened: Oktibbeha County Miss June 17th 1834 Mary, I was realy glad to rec your Letter & to hear that you were all well & doing well. for I am not doing as well as I could wish. Although I have as good or better health now than I have had for Several [torn out] Back. yet I am not Happy But I try [torn out] resigned to my Situation as I possably [torn out] I have never recd a Letter from Moore Since I Came here. Bethiah only two Letters, those dated in Aprle. And one from Wm Armour. I have recd Several from Kent ucky and one Last Friday which has added to my unhappiness very much. Cousin Nancy Bridges wrote me that there was a man that passed upon this rode that Said he had called on me & that I was Married for he had Seen my wife with me. Which is a Possative Lie. But it has given me So much uneasiness that I realy have Not Slept much Since. I have just Seald a Letter to her in which I have placed two Certifycates that I hope will Satisfy her, if not I can [obtain] half a dozen more which Shurely will Convince her it is a lie. We have had a two Days Meeting I attended on Saturday but that news was so fresh in my mind & hurte me So much that I Could not hear preaching & felt So Very unhappy on Sunday morning that I did not go to Church. but my Neighbor Mrs Car (a real Methodist) was there & has been to See me. she Says PAGE TWO on back of page one, left side of inside center fold: She was Sorry I did not go. Not that She thought preaching So very good or So very Edifying but Just to have witnessed the excite ment that was amongst the people in the Evening & She can not find out the Cause of it for She thought the Preaching rather weake in Every respect only of Loud Balling and Hollering without any kinde of Rule or Method. but Just Hollow as loud as possible & try to tell Some tale to reach the feelings of the hearers. the Preacher made [torn out] to sett the greater part of the people in the house [torn out] except herself and two or three others. And realy [she said] one thought of Laughing than Crying. & one Man whose Wife Cried Stoutly went & Stood near to her & cursed the Preacher for a Damd Fool There is a Methodist Preaching for us to Day but I could not get from home. Mrs. Car is gone & will Call to tell me all the Sermon as she returns. I wish I could have went & wrote the whole Sermon down to have Sent you. This is male day & [Cube?] is gone to the [P Office?] I must [stop?] untill he comes & See if I get any news from S. Carolina, [Cube?] has returned & no letter. Shurely Bethiah is dead or has Forgotten me & Moore never writes to me. Jane I believe cannot get leave to write to me. When you rec this if you have any news worth writing do write to me There is a fine young Man fromYazoo County. I wish you were here to catch him. I Should help you all I could. We are Very Dry. no rain for six weeks Past. my Crop Suffers Very much. here is a Letter just Come to me this minute from a young Lawyer in Georgia wishing me to try to get him into business or find him Some Employ ment that he can make a Living. I have very Little Acquaintence with him but think very much of him for what I had. he wrote me a Beautiful Letter & Stated his Situation Very Plainly. When he Comes here you must Come Down & See him too. PAGE THREE on right side of inside center fold: I Expect to Start to Mobile in 8 or 10 Days and will not return for 20 or 25 Days I hope by that time to have an answer We are remarkably healthy here, worke harde & Eates Harty. Bob Jamison Says hes never had a better appitite in his Life – Just while writing in Comes a Bear Seates himself in the porch & is now Singing as Loud as a Cow Balling & is Just as proud as [torn out] wants him to be. Give my [torn out] your Friends and tell your Aunt Caty to write to me. tell your Father to Come Down to See this part of the South. I think he might Like it better than Tenasee – I am remarkably pinched for the want of Cash and must attend to my Business or I would go up there. much rather than go to Mobile I was a Juryman Last week for the first Court in this County. The Court sat under a Large Hickory tree (for want of a house but there was no business in Court & it did not Hold us more than three or four hours – but I do expect well have plenty for this next term. I have nearly Sold my place – If I do Sell I will remove West [of the] Miss River or probably go with a Spanish Gentleman who wants me to go with him to his Country.
