I, John Strother of the County of Pike and State of Mississippi being in my perfect mind and memory, but knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make, constitute and ordain this my last will and testament. First of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it. My body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner. As it relates to the things of this life that it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give, demise and bequeath in the form following: Item 1st. To my beloved wife Hannah Strother it is my will and desire that she shall remain in full and quiet possession of all my lands, Negroes, stock of every description, all my farming implements, household and kitchen furniture, and in every other thing belonging or in any wise appertaining to my estate at my death during her natural lifetime or widowhood. Item 2nd. And as it respects my beloved daughter Lucy Hamilton, it is my will and desire for her to remain in quiet possession of a Negro girl named Viney, one feather bed and furniture which she has received at this time. Item 3rd. And as respects my beloved sons William and Harrison, I give to them after the death of my beloved wife, the land on which I now live and the Negroes Nanny, Isabel and Moses, one feather bed and furniture to each, which said land and Negroes, and also the increase, beds, etc to be equally divided between them at the death of my wife. Item 4th. And as it respects my daughter Tabitha, I give to her a Negro girl named Maria and feather bed and furniture which [she] is also to receive at the death of her mother and not before. Item 5th. As it respects my daughter Elizabeth McGallen, it is not my will that she or her heirs shall at my death receive any part of my estate, as I have already done as much for her as seems to me to be just and equitable. Item 6th. As it is my will and desire that after the death of my beloved wife Hannah that all the stock of every description, all the household and kitchen furniture and farming tools that she may be in possession of, also my two Negroes, namely Adam and Susan, and her increase, and the increase of Viney to be sold and the prescribes and the money arising out of the sales of such estate to be equally divided among the following named children (to wit): Mary Gordon, Jamison Strother, Peggy Harris, Tabitha Page, and Frances Carter, believing what has been willed to the youngest children heretofore named equal to that amount. Item 7th. I further consider that I have given to my daughter Aby Lowe, now deceased, her equal portion of my estate and hereby declare that her heirs shall at my death receive nothing more. Item 8th. It is also my sincere desire that my beloved wife shall be the sole guardian of my two sons William and Harrison and my daughter Susan, that until they arrive to the years of maturity, and to keep them together on the plantation. And as for the true and faithful execution of this my last will and testament, I do constitute and appoint my true and faithful friend Lab [ ? ] Bacot my executor and my beloved wife Hannah Strother executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby declaring this to be my last will and testament, revoking all wills by me heretofore made. Given under my hand and seal this 23rd day of August 1827 in the presence of the subscribing witnesses who were present with the testator at the time of signing the same and are in the presence of each other.
