Recorded: October 1858 THE STATEOF MISSISSIPPI WARREN COUNTY The Last Will and Testament of John Bowls of the County and State Aforesaid. In the name of God amen. I John Bowls of the County of Warren and State of Mississippi do make and declare this to be my last will and testament. First, I appoint and constitute Benjamin T. Edwards, Executor of this will and guardian for James M. Hoffman and of the children of Mary A. F. Bowls and Mary Conger. Second, I give and bequeath to James Monroe Hoffman the west half of the south east quarter of section twenty three in township eighteen of range nine west in Carroll Parish, Louisiana – and to his heirs as assigns absolutely. Third, I give to William A. and Martha Ann Bowls children of Mary A. F. Bowls the east half of the south east quarter of the same section with that of Jas. M. Hoffman to be occupied by her until the children come of age – then to them in fee simple. Fourth, I give to Mary Conger the south west quarter of the same section with Jas. M. Hoffman & Wm. A. & Martha A. Bowls to own during her natural life and to her heirs in fee simple. Fifth, I wish my executor to sell my [unreadable] Hartwell to Mrs. Lavincy Johnston for [twelve hundred dollars was marked out] one thousand dollars. Sixth, My executor is directed and [unreadable] to sell my land in Section 20 Township 16, Range 4 East in Warren County Miss after notice on a credit of one and two years, and to make deed for the same without any need of the Probate Court – the proceeds to be [unreadable]. Seventh, I wish all my personal property not herein ordered sold at public auction on a credit as my executor may choose. Eighth, The proceeds of my land in Warren County – my Negroes and all my estate except the land in Louisiana, I direct to be divided into five equal shares – one to the Children of John Barefield now living – one to Mrs. Lavincy Johnston – one to Mary Conger – one to Mary A. F. Bowls and one share to James M. Hoffman. Ninth I appoint Benjm T. Edwards guardian of Jas M. Hoffman and of the children of Mary Conger and Mary A. F. Bowls and with him I direct the share of each under the 8th clause in this will to remain and he will pay interest upon it or loan it at interest until it be all disbursed in the support of the said minors - He will pay to each as fast as he may chose both of interest and principal and if any remain when they arrive at the age of twenty one or marry then pay all remaining in his hands. Tenth the land bequeathed to Jas M. Hoffman is charged with the payment of the taxes upon the lot granted to Mary A. F. Bowls children until Jas. Monroe Hoffman comes of age.
