H. GILES PASSES AWAY Larkin Halloway Giles, 70 years of age, died Wednesday morning, May 9, at 5:50 o'clock, at the Barber Hospital. Mr. Larkin had been suffering from low blood pressure and the immediate cause of his death was a heart attack which he suffered on Tuesday, May 8. Larkin Halloway Giles was the son of Mr. amd Mrs. J. H. Giles of Waynesboro, Mississippi, and was the eldest of eight children, six members of his family preceding him in death. When just a young man he came to Alabama to make his home and on January 2, 1900, married Miss Alice Mae Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Campbell. To this union were born five children, three boys and two girls, all of whom survive him. Mr. Giles was a successful merchant in Silas for the past six years, where he helped numerous people who called on him in time of distress. He gave his maker all the credit for his success and oft repeated, "The Lord has greatly blessed me in this business." He kept in mind that one never loses by helping those they need help. Mr. Giles was a member of the Woodmen of the World organization, and Deacon of the Baptist Church of Souwilpa. he was a lover of his church, and cheerful giver, who loved singing, and has taught several singing schools. He composed the song. "Wonderful Joy", and set it to music, this beong one of the songs sung at his funeral. Funeral services were held at the Isney Cemetery, May 10, with Bros. H. V. Sollie of Aimwell, Alabama and C. H. Mason of Isney, conducting. Special music was rendered by Mr. John Sikes, Mr. Clifton Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. George Sikes of Silas, accompanied by Mrs. Lenora Covington. The aboved named people compose the Branch Quartet. Pallbearers were E. T. Robinson, H. H. Beard, C. G. Wimberly, S. A. Mixon, J. D. Norton, and Gene McLemore. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Ethel Singley, Gilbertown; Annie Mae McFadden, Silas; three sons, Elba Giles, Herman Giles, and Clayton Giles, all of Silas; 17 grandchildren, including two grandsons in US service, Lyman B. Singley, S-1C Pensacola, Fla and Pfc Ervin C. Giles, Hospital in England. He was laid to rest beneath a blanket of beautiful flowers which evidenced the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. Additional Comments: Larkin was born 12-1-1878 to James H.
