George Newell was born in 1785, probably in Virginia, married Lydia Howard and became a wealthy plantation owner in Wilkinson county, Mississippi. He owned about 1000 acres to the south of Woodville with approximately 60 slaves, and as is indicated in the will, other real estate, and an interest in a local business. His plantation adjoined or was very near the plantations of his brother, William Newell, the Walker family, and the McKee family. George died in 1833 at the age of 48. Newell of the County of Wilkinson in the State of Mississippi being weak of body, but of sound disposing mind and memory do make and establish this my last will and testament. Item 1st- It is my will and desire that all my property both real and personal be equally divided between my children, and do hereby give and bequeath the same to them and their heirs forever, except that if any of my children, should marry and die, without leaving a child or children, then in that case it is my will that ones portion of my Estate return and be equally divided between my children then living- Item 2nd It is my will and desire that my dear wife keep all my property together, on the plantation, where I now live until my two sons, John Howard Newell, and William Newell, shall become of by Law to choose their own Guardian, and that my said wife care of my property until that time that she have the right and power to ship my crop of cotton or the crops made on the plantation to New Orleans & to receive the amount of sales, and receive the proceeds of said Sales, and divide the same equally between my children, Item 3rd I give and bequeath to my Grandson George Bell Wailes one thousand Dollars to be paid to Hugh Connell Guardian for my said Grandson out of the first funds that can be spared, Item 4th It is my will and desire that my daughter Jane Wailes keep negroes Rosa and Henry to be accounted for by her as a part of her share of my Estate, also Eighteen hundred Dollars, which I have advanced her husband, also to be accounted for as a part of her portion of my Estate, Item 5th, I do appoint my brother William Newell Guardian for my son Wm Newell & Edward H. Wailes, Guardian for my son John Howard Newell. And I do hereby appoint my dear wife Executrix & my brother William Newell & my son-in- law Edward H Wailes, Executor of this my last will & testament. In testimony whereof I do hereby sign my name & affix my seal this 21 day of May A.D. 1831 Executed in our presence, we have witnessed the same at the request of the testator & in his presence & in presence of each other. Newell, Lydia Ann Newell, Clarissa Newell, William Newell and John Howard Newell Infant children of George B. Newell decd. of which said children I have become the legally qualified Guardian (viz) one seventh and individed part of the residue of that tract or parcel of land situated in the county on the waters of Thompsons Creek, containing in all one thousand acres, and being the plantation on which the said Late George B Newell last resided, after deducting three hundred and fifty acres set apart and allotted to me By order of the County Court as my Dower as per Report of commissioners appointed for that purpose which said Report is now on file in the County Court of this County---one seventh of one undivided half of a tract or parcel of land situate on Shulars Creek in this county and Entered Jointly by said George B. Newell and E. H. Wailes and containing altogether two Hundred and Eighty seven acres. One Seventh and undivided part of fifty five negroes being the number now belonging to the Estate of the said George B. Newell Decd after deducting those allotted and set apart before mentioned and on file the whole number of Negroes of said Estate being appraised at $12,925 dollars as per appraisement of said Estate also on file in the office of the County Court. Also one-Eighth and undivided part of all the other personal Estate of the said late George B. Newell consisting of horses, mules, cattle, sheep, hogs, farming utensils, house hold and kitchen furniture of said Estate above refered to as on file in the office of the county court of this county.
