William Newell was born in Tennessee, date unknown, and became a wealthy plantation owner in Wilkinson county Mississippi. He married Adaline Dupuy of Louisiana. William's plantation lay to the south of Woodville, near the plantation of his brother George, and those of the Walker and McKee families. He died in 1834, however some of the conditions of his will were not carried out until 20 years later, and then only as a result of a lawsuit by one of the heirs. Anyone interested in the Newell family is invited to contact Brett Hope, bhope@gbso.net, a direct descendent of William Newell. ________________________________________________________________________ The Last Will and Testament of William Newell In the name of God amen, I William Newell of the county of WIlkinson and State of Mississippi being of sound mind an memory though weak and deseased in body, do make and ordain this my last will and testament , Item 1st I do will and bequeath my immortal soul to that great and merciful God who gave it, trusting in the efficacy of the blood of a crucified Savior, my perishing body to the dust, 2nd, I t is my will that all my property both real and prsonal be kept together in the Plantation on which I now live, that my dear wife have the management of the same, under the direction of my friends Hugh Connell and E.H. Wailes, and that no part thereof of its proceeds be removed from this state until my children all become of age and receive their just proportion of the same, 3rd, It is my will that my dear wife shall bear equal heir with my children in all my effects after the settlement of all my just debts and following legacies, 4th I do hereby give and bequeath to my daughter Jane the two following mulatto girls to wit Nancy and Patsy, 5th I do give and bequeath to my oldest son George Newell my gold watch, 6th It is my will that my estate that is my heirs have the same interest in the firm of JP Harns & Co that I now individually have so long as it may meet the approbation and pleasure of said Harns, and my friends and Ececutors to continue that busines, 7th I do give and bequeath the little mulatto girl Celeste to my daughter Caroline, 8th I do give and bequeath to my son Blanchard, the negro boy Armistead, 9th All the household and kitchen furniture I give and bequeath to my dear wife, 10th The tract of land which I purchased of the estate of John Connell the deed to which is in my own name belongs to or will belong in part to Thomas Lye that one undivided half of the same on the said Lyne paying on half of the purchase money for the same and it is my will that my executors make him a deed to said half on his producing indince to them of his having so paid said half of the purchase money. 11th, Thomas Lye is entitled to one third of the proceeds of the present crop on the place purchased Jointly by him and myself of the estate John Connelly and it is my will that any executor pay over to said him that proportion of said proceeds, 12th It is necessary and my will in continuation of the 10th article of this my last will and testament that Thomas Line pay his part or proportion of the purchase money of the tract of land purchased of the estate of John Connell punctually as the installments become due otherwise that he forfeit his interest in and claim to the said land to my estate. 13th It is my will that in the event of the birth of one or more children with which my dear wife may now be pregnant, that they or it shall have and recieve each or either as the case may be, a negro equal in value to the one willed to my son Blanchard to be designated by my dear wife, 14th It is my desire that my friends Hugh Connell and E.H. Wailes, superintend and direct the education of my dear children together with my dear wife, 15th It is my will that Miss Caroline Dupuy the neice of my wife continue at the school of Mr. Ranaldson or some other good school two years from the time she commenced with the said Ranaldson and that her board tuition and clothing and other necessary expenses for that time be defrayed out of the proceeds of my estate. 16th It is my will that Hugh Connell and E.H. Wailes be the executors of my estate or my wife be executrix of the same, Hereby exhonerating my said Executors and Executrix from securityship for the faithful execution of the same having confidence in their honesty and integrity.
