Milton was born in South Carolina according to 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Censuses for Mississippi. He moved to Mississippi as young man in about 1841. He wed first, in about 1849, Susan N. Legrand, daughter of Frances Gayle and Dr. William Todd Legrand of Tennessee. They appear in the 1850 US census at Lexington, Mississippi where he was a dentist. They then moved to Grenada where he was a dentist and later, became the town mayor. Children Fannie, Robert, Willie (William), Walter and an infant were likely born to them there. It appears, however, that none of their children survived beyond early childhood. Sue died in 1857 at age 26 and is buried with four of their children. Her gravestone inscription reads: "Sue, only daughter of Dr. W.T. Legrand and wife of Dr. John L. Milton, died 28 April, 1857 aged 26. Also Willie, Fannie, Walter and the baby" at the base of her marker. John married second, Francis "Jennie" Moore, daughter of Rev. Albert Moore and Mary __ on March 30, 1859 at Yalobusha County, Mississippi. John and Jennie had 4 known children: Alberta, Jennie Sue, Legrand John, and Albert Moore Milton. Jennie died in 1871 at age 36. Alberta and Jennie Sue did not survive infancy and are interred with her. John did not marry again. He served as mayor of Grenada until his death at age 55 during the yellow fever epidemic of August 1878, of which he was one of the first to succumb. John provided instructions regarding his estate in a letter just prior to his death in August 1878. See excerpts of that letter in "History of Grenada County" by H.C. Hathorn. The burial records of many who died during the epidemic are unknown or have been lost. Victims were interred in Grenada Cemetery, The Odd Fellows Cemetery, the Yellow Fever Cemetery, or possibly elsewhere during the epidemic. His grave, as well as many other victims, is apparently unmarked. The graves of his two wives and six of their children are in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Wife Sue's marker is inscribed with the names of their children "Willie, Fannie, Walter and the baby." On the reverse side is inscribed the name of his second wife Jennie and their children Alberta and Jennie Sue Milton. The probate of Dr. John L Milton's estate, dated Dec 13, 1878 at Grenada County, Mississippi shows Mrs. Lou A (Moore) Payne, the sister of his wife Francis Jennie Moore Milton, was appointed guardian for their sons Legrand (age 15) and Albert Milton (age 13). Of his eight known children, only these two are known to have survived to adulthood. Information sources include "History of Grenada County" by J.C. Hathorn and "Yellow Fever Martyrs Church & Museum" website for more about Grenada Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878. Additional Comments: No birth record or confirmation of his parents found.
