Terrell , (1803-1846), in Benton, MS To: Captain Jonathan Jackson Lamb (abt. 1795 – 1848 or 1849), Paris, TN RE: Terrell is alerting Lamb that it has been advertised that there will be a sale by the sheriff on 1 April 1839 of some of Lamb’s “negroes” for debts. Donated: From the collection of Laura Conrad White Stettbacher (1936-), 2nd great-granddaughter of Jonathan Lamb Transcription, formatted: Laura Byers Stettbacher Van Ness (1961-) Last updated: 19 Jan 2022 Cover: Addressee: Capt Jnoth Lamb Paris Tennessee Hand stamped: BENTON MAR 20 Postage mark: 2 Transcription, Letter: Benton March 19th 1839 My Dear Capt. I suppose you have received McS___ letter informing you that 10 or 1_ of the negroes have been levied on by the sheriff and marshal. The Marshal first levied for Bick’s debt_ then the sheriff for old Carman’s and they have nearly one half[?] the negroes off the place_ I know not yet how many, as I have just got here, and have not been out yet. If you have not started down, set out immediately, and I will endeavor to keep off the sale, until you get here, and probably it can be prevented. It is extremely distressing to my feelings, but as I cannot prevent, it is useless to indulge unavailing regrets on the subject. Such an accumulation of debt upon me at once, has placed it out of my power to do anything. You are aware however, that they cannot deprive you of the possession of the property_ It will be best however for you to hurry down as fast as possible. They are advertised to be sold on the first Monday in April . I will endeavor to have it postponed_ and think from a conversation I have just had with the sheriff, he will do so.
