Phelan, 47, "Sheshahowi-ish" "Buffalo Bill Snorting" of Hardin, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, in Billings, of injuries sustained in a two-car accident. "Spotted foot" was born June 20, 1950, in Minot, N.D., a son of Alonzo and Adele Fredricks Phelan. He grew up and attended schools in North Dakota. He was a bronc rider who actively participated in high school and Indian rodeo circuits, specializing in the bareback event. Gary enjoyed riding and breaking horses and singing western songs. He married Susan Paulson and was later divorced. He married Jenny Deputy on Nov. 25, 1985, in Hardin and the couple made their home in Hardin. He worked as a heavy equipment operator. Gary was baptized as a Catholic and later associated with the Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his adopted mother, Olive Stewart. Gary was a friend to all he met. Survivors include his wife, Jenny of Hardin; five sons, Jasper Young Bear of North Dakota, J.D. Buckley of South Dakota, Darnell, Merval and Gary Phelan Jr., all of Hardin; six daughters, Jennifer Young Bear and June Yellow Lodge of North Dakota, Francesca Galaz, Cabrina, Trixy and Trista Phelan of Hardin; three brothers, Ambrose (Shannon) Phelan, Randy (Jessica) Phelan and George (Virginia) Pease of Hardin; two sisters, LuAnn Phelan of North Dakota, and Karen (Hugo) White Clay of Hardin; an adopted sister, Marjorie (Arnold) Wilkinson of Crow Agency; a half-sister, Marily Odgen of North Dakota; two adopted brothers, Greeley Not Afraid and Lloyd Picket of Crow Agency; and his adopted father, Donald Stewart Sr. Of Crow Agency. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin is entrusted with the arrangements.
