Samuel "Sam" Hert, 84, of Billings, formerly of Hardin, passed away Monday morning, March 23, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born July 2, 1913, in Custer, a son of Conrad and Lydia Stark Hert. He grew up in Custer and attended schools in Custer and the North Valley School. Following his education, Sam married Leah Steinmetz on Jan. 20, 1931, in Nebraska and the couple made their home in Hardin. Sam was a jack of all trades, performing everything from farming in the North Valley and for Campbell Farming, to working a rock quarry at Lime Kill, serving as police chief of Hardin and operating a Conoco gas station in Billings. He enjoyed flying and was a pioneer member of the Hardin Flying Club. He was an outdoors man, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, but found his greatest pleasure attending family gatherings. He was preceded in death by two children, six brothers and four sisters. Survivors include his wife of over 67 years, Leah of Billings; two sons, Jim (Gloria) Hert of Billings, Tom Hert of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Joyce (Bob) Greenwald of Powell, Wyo.; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
