Daniel 'Sonny' Takes Gun Jr. LODGE GRASS - Daniel "Sonny" Takes Gun Jr., 43, of Lodge Grass, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, near Lodge Grass. He was born April 10, 1954, in Crow Agency, a son of Daniel and Virginia White Hip Takes Gun Sr. He was raised in Lodge Grass and attended area schools. He later attended Rocky Mountain College, studying business administration. He grew up around horses and later raised and trained thoroughbred race horses. Sonny married Haroldine Backbone on Aug. 2, 1983, and the couple made their home in Lodge Grass. For a short time, the couple lived in Bismarck, N.D., where he received electrician training. He was currently employed by the Crow Housing Authority as a electrician and carpenter, specializing in renovations. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Ties The Bundle Clan, Ree Society and was a Bad War Deeds child. Sonny was a tradition Crow male who was a "gifted Christian singer," who participated in drum groups and was a medicine man for the Lodge Grass District Hand games team. He supported all traditional events, including Pow-Wows and arrow throwing, often following his children at these events. He enjoyed playing and watching basketball. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; a grandson, Issac; a sister, Roseen; and a brother, Larry. Survivors include his wife, Haroldine of Lodge Grass; two daughters, Bridget Takes Gun and Carlene Jefferson of Lodge Grass; one adopted daughter, Clarissa Nomee of Billings; nine sisters Georgine (Ronald) Falls Down, Maria Onion, and Latonna (Sharon) Old Elk of Crow Agency, Annie (Cyrus) Leider, Carmen (Clayton) LaForge, Mary Agnes White Hip and Arbutus Coversup of Lodge Grass and Natalie Stewart of Pryor; two brothers, Ryder White Hip of Lodge Grass and Steven White Hip of Pryor; his grandfather, John Left Hand of Canada; his adopted parents, Joe and Lorraine Bear Cloud of Crow Agency; one adopted brother, Robert (Alberta) Rides Horse of Lodge Grass; his uncles, Jerome and Vincent White Hip, Bill and Gordon Lincoln, Phillip Beaumont, Andrew Russell and Willis Medicine Horse Jr.; and his aunts, Clara Nomee, Ada Rides Horse, Mary Frances Flat Lip, Agnes Parrish, Hannah Pretty on Top, Lois White Hip, Ernestine Bird in Ground, Victoria Hogan, Marie Lincoln, Rosemary Lincoln and Wyla Red Wolf. Rosary services will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Lodge Grass Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday in the Church, with Fr. Jim Antoine, celebrant. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin is entrusted with the arrangements.
