Robert "Bob" Brien Jr. - White Clay Robert "Bob" Brien, Jr.-White Clay, 67, of Lodge Grass, died Saturday evening, March 7, 1998, at the St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. Hiishe'isee'o'osh, "Brings The Big Bay Horse" was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Crow Agency, a son of Robert and Lucy Cummins Brien, Sr. At the age of two, he was adopted by Vernon and Fannie White Clay. He grew up in the Black Lodge District north of Crow Agency and attended school in Crow Agency and the Busby Boarding School. Bob farmed and ranched with his father, until he enlisted in the United State Marine Corps in 1952. He served his country until 1954 and received his honorable discharge, after which he fulfilled six year reserve status. He was the former Commander of the Absalooka VFW Post 550. He worked for the Little Horn Tschirgi Ranch near Wyola, various area farms and ranches, the BIA Road Department, Crow Tribal Game Warden for four years and the Indian Health Service for several years. He married Wilma Howe in Lodge Grass in 1959 and the couple made Lodge Grass their home. He was a member of the Lodge Crass Baptist Church, Pentecostal Church, the Ties the Bundle Clan and was a Whistling Water Child. Bob was a traditional man, who participated in several Sun Dances. During his his lifetime he actively participated in rodeos throughout Montana, specializing in the bull riding event. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; three sisters, Marie Yellowtail, Emily Lincoln and Edith Big Lake; six brothers, Guy and Archie White Cly, Delmer, Richard, Clarence and Kenneth Brien, Sr.; one daughter, Alcyne Sherry; and two sons, Ronald and Phillip Brien Survivors include his wife Wilma of over 38 years; 13 sons, Frederick (Denette) Brien of Hardin, Larry Dan Brien of Sandstone Minn., Vernon P. Brien of Auburn, Wash., Wayne R. Brien, Wayne K. Howe, Conrad Stops and Myron Eastman all of Lodge Grass, Robert Brien III of Lame Deer, Matt Emigh of Seymore, Ind., Garrett Stops of Colstrip, Joe Whitewolf of Crow Agency and Kevin Howe of Norfolk, Va.; 11 daughters, Valerie (Dana) Bird, Barbara A. Brien, Kisha Larae Brien and Mary Williamson all of Lodge Grass, Bobaleen (Clinton) Walk, Barbara Susan Stewart, Lucille Brien and Joyce LaForge all of Crow Agency, Roberta (Pedro) Hernandez of Billings, Martha (Steve) Larimer of Hardin and Verna Mae Koch of Bismarck, N.D.; four adopted daughters, Bobby Jean Medicine Horse of Pryor, Clemencia, Vanetta, and Edwina Stops of Crow Agency; five adopted sons, Gilbert Packineau, Edward Black Smith, Clay Black Smith and Billy Day Child all of Lodge Grass, and Dean Little Light of Canada; eight brothers, Vernon (Carol) White Clay, Jr., Mervin (Darlene) Eastman and Thomas (Cheryl) White Clay all of Crow Agency, Harold (Nora) White Clay of Ft. Smith and Phillip (Vera) Whit Clay of Hardin, Ronald (Bernadine) Eastman of Oneida, N.Y., John Cummins Jr. of Lodge Grass, and Harold Buster of Lodge Gras; three adopted brothers, Melvin Fox of Mandaree, N.D., Thomas Whiteman of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Raymond White of Crow Agency; seven sisters, Alice Mae LaForge, Veronica White Clay and Agnes Faraway all of Crow Agency, Rebecca (Dennis) Buffalo, Martha White Clay of Hardin and Anna Bear Cloud and Jolene White Clay both of Lodge Grass; one aunt, Agnes "Tala" Cummins. He is also survived by 53 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Crow Indian Baptist Mission in Lodge Grass. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
