Allen, 63 Years Resident of Montana, Came to State in Covered Wagon. John F. Allen of Chance, for 63 years a resident of Montana, died Wednesday morning at an early hour at his ranch home following a severe stroke three weeks ago which left him paralyzed, helpless and semi-conscious. Mr. Allen had been a prominent resident of the Clark Fork valley in the Chance region for 30 years, coming there from Pony, Madison Co., Montana where the family home was established in the 1860’s. Mr. Allen, with his father and step mother and several brothers and sisters, made the trip to Montana overland, by way of the old Boseman Trail in 1863, with one of the first wagon trains penetrating the vast unpeopled Rocky mountain region. The family settled near Pony and the original homestead is still in the family, two younger brothers of Mr. Allen still residing there. Some 23 years ago Mr. Allen homesteaded the present Allen ranch in the valley just below Chance and he was responsible for conquering some of the obstacles to irrigation of lands in the valley, designing the first irrigating flume across the rive to avoid impassable bluffs. When just a lad the pioneer spirit led the family to the covered wagon trail westward, finally finding satisfaction in the open spaces of Montana. Six sons and two daughters and the widow (Alma Bell Allen) survive. The sons are: Oliver, at White Sulphur Springs, Frank, address unknown, Zadock, Chicago, Illinois, Claud, Marshalfield, Oreogon, Elgin and Grant, at the ranch home at Chance, the daughters, Mrs. Henry Goldsmith (Rachel Alma), Forest Grove, Oregon, who is now in a hospital at Bearcreek convalescing from a recent illness, and Mrs. Eva Chance, Billings. There are 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Three brothers and five sisters also survive. Funeral arrangements are uncertain, pending word from the several sons and daughters at distant…… (John F. Allen is buried at the Cemetery in Chance, Carbon Co., Mt.)
