McFate, 73 year old former Carbon County Sherif, died at his residence at 9:15 am Thursday. He had been ill for the past several months. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at the Elks home. The Martin funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Well known in Carbon County, Mr. McFate was born the son of Alexander and Elizabeth McFate, September 18, 1876 in Sandstone (Jackson Co.) Mich. On January 9, 1901 he was married to Miss Isabel Eliza Hathaway at Concord, Mich. The couple came to Red Lodge immediately after their marriage. His wife preceeded him in death on March 17 of this year. He served as sheriff of Carbon county from September 16, 1933 until January 1943. He was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Walter Lamport and was elected to serve two terms in the office. During his term of public service, he was well konwn throughout the county and was activie in Democratic circles for many years. Prio to his advent to publick life, Mr. McFate was employed in the Red Lodge mines. He was made foreman at the east side mine in 1914 and served in that capacity for several years. In 1943, he purchased Flash's newsstand which he operated under his own name until he became ill. He was affiliated with Star in the West Lodge, No. 40, A.F. & A.M., Beartooth lodge, No. 534, B.P.O.E. and the Red Lodge aerie, No 742, F.O.E. He is survived by a son, Alex McFate and a daughter, Mrs. George Thompson, both of Red Lodge; two sister, Mrs. Jane James and Mrs. Rose Whiting, living in Michigan, a brother, Frank McFate, Spokane, Wash. and four grandchildren.
