Obits submitted by gmom.distad@aol.com USGENWEB Montana Archives Harry Baker Lewistown paper 12-12-1976 Funeral services for Harry D Baker, 80, Central Montana native, were Friday at the Cloyd Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert D. Bohyer of St. James Episcopal church officiating. Baker died Tuesday evening at the central Montana Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born March 12, 1896 near Lewistown, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Zackaria Baker. He received his education in the Lewistown Schools. In 1917 he enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas during World War I. For services beyond the call of duty, Baker was awarded the silver star and four bronze star. During his stay in Europe, Baker, an accomplished violinist, played with a show troupe, and studied the violin under a well know professor. His family had the first orchestra in Central Montana in 1883. After his return from the army, Baker attended a barbers college in Spokane, Washington. He operated a barber shop in Lewistown until 1971, when he retired. Since that time, he had continued to make his home in Lewistown. He is survived by one son, Douglas of Long Beach, California; one daughter Sharon Baker of Boston, Massachusetts; and five grandchildren. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans, both of Lewistown. Mrs. Don Foster sang "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Lords Prayer" during the funeral. Mrs. Leonard Langford was organist. Pallbearers were Ed Duffner, Coleman Jacklin, Oscar Mauland, Pete Tuss, Floyd Wolfe and Bill Zeller. Burial was in the veterans section of the Lewistown City cemetery. Military honors were delivered at graveside by the Fergus Post No. 16, American Legion. ******************************************************************** GERALD (RED) BARBER Lewistown paper -12-3-1982 Lewistown, Mt. Fergus County DENTON: A memorial service will be held Friday at the Denton Town Hall for Gerald (Red) Barber who died Friday December 3, after a long illness. Interment will be in the Lewistown Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Kapalka of the Denton Methodist Church will officiate and the Western Start Lodge no. 104 will give the Masonic rites. The casket will not be open. A family and friends dinner will be served in the Town Hall after the services. Barber was one of Denton's most outstanding citizens. Born June 20, 1919 at the Kierstad place on Wolf Creek that was later absorbed into the Twin Butte Ranch, he was the son of T. O. and Edna Wise Barber. He grew up on the ranch in Bear Springs and attended elementary school in the Twin Butte School. He graduated from Denton High School in 1937. Barber also attended Montana State University for one year. During the depression, he helped build the highways. In 1939, Barber and his brother Robert formed a partnership to farm that lasted until 1973. Whenever there was a community activity or something to be built, Barber was always there. He was a member of the Eagles, the Elks, the Moose Lodge and the Masons, of which he was past master. He was also a charter member of the Denton Lions Club, one of the first persons to join the Montana Grain Growers Association served on the ASCS, the church board and the city council. He helped build the Methodist Church and the swim pool. He married Margaret Harvey in June 0f 1976, who survives him. After his marriage, he ranched in the Arrowcreek Area. Besides his wife, Barber is survived by two sons Jerry Franklin of Houston, TX and Ted Lewis, who's stationed in the U. S. Navy in Subic Bay, Philippine Islands; a daughter Barbara Ann Snooks of Denton; three step-daughters Roseanna McLees of Miles City and Connie and Barbara Harvey of Billings; seven brotheres, Leonal E., John F., Donald R. and Robert T, all of Denton, Marvin R. of Big Timber, Dr. William D. of Tucson, AZ and Kenneth F. of Woodbine, MD; two sisters, Betty Omanson of Sun Valley, ID and Burnetta Brady of Lewistown; and several nieces and nephews and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson and his parents. Friends wishing to do so may make memorials to the Denton Lions Club or the Denton Ambulance Service. "TAGG" BARBER June 1995, Lewistown Daily News, Lewistown, MT. Margaret J. "Tagg" Barber, 73, Denton, passed away early Monday morning, June 19, at the central Montana Medical Center due to a lengthy illness. Mrs. Barber was born at Great Falls on March 9, 1922 to John C. and Laura Singleton Alt. She received her education in the Great Falls schools. On Nov. 22, 1945, at Great Falls, she was united in marriage to Robert Barber, and they have been residents of Denton since 1945. She was an active member of the Denton Community United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Peace Circle and was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. In addition, she decorated the church altar throughout the years and also decorated the church during the Christmas season. Tagg enjoyed working with children and taught swimming lessons for many years. She was also past president of the Denton American Legion Auxiliary and was Past Worthy Matron of the Denton Chapter No 72 Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Barber was a member of the Community Concert Association and the Lewistown Art center. She also served her community as an election judge and a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She was also a member of the Fergus County Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. Barber enjoyed all arts and crafts, cooking, and music - taking piano and organ lessons until 1994. She had a sense of adventure and was always ready to go on a trip. She was also a reporter for the Lewistown News-Argus for many years covering events in the Denton area. Mrs. Barber is survived by her husband of Denton; a son Peter L. Barber of Denton; a daughter, Robin Barber of Sioux Falls, SD; a brother, John C. Alt, Jr. Of great Falls; three sisters, Louise Surmi and Ann E. Alt, both of Great Falls, and Ida Dora Maxwell of California; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parent and a son, David L Barber, who died in 1968 during the Vietnam War. Funeral services will be at the Denton Community United Methodist Church Friday, June 23 at 10 a. m. Rev. Sandy Peterson will be officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in denton. Memorials may be made to the Denton Swimming Pool or the Denton Ambulance Replacement Fund. She was born Nov. 9, 1904, at Albert Lea, Minnesota, the daughter of Chrestian and Sena Larsen. She began her schooling in Minnesota, moving to Montana in 1912 where she attended schools in the Roy area. She was a graduate of Moore High School. After graduation, she worked in the Central Montana area. She married Elmer L. Bare in Lewistown June 14, 1924. The couple continued to live in the Central Montana area until the mid-1940s when they moved to Portland. Laura worked in the Portland shipyards. She then operated a restaurant in the Portland area. In 1952-53 she traveled to Africa. She returned to Portland and resided in Portland and California before moving to Lewistown in the early 1970s. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Violet Larson of Lewistown: three sans, Dale of Aloha, Oregon, Archie of Vancouver, Washington, and Edward of Denver, Colorado.; two sisters, Helen Carnell and Amy Martin, both of Lewistown: 22 grandchildren: 34 great-grandchildren: two great- great-grandchildren: and several niece Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 20, at the Cloyd Chapel, with interment at Lewistown City Cemetery. Barrows, 79, of Lewistown, died Wednesday afternoon at the Central Montana Hospital following a short illness. She was born Oct. 2, 1908 in White Lake. SD., a daughter of Fred and Anna Becker. She received her education there and after graduating from White Lake High School in 1928, She moved to Lewistown, where she made her home until the time of her death. On May 6, 1910, she married Willard Franklin (Frank) Barrows. He preceded her in death in 1978. Mrs. Barrows was a member of Marie Chapter No. 36 Order of Eastern Star, the Daughters at the Nile and a very active member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary. She was employed at various restaurants in Lewistown including the Gem Cafe, the Elks Club, the Midway, Lewistown Market and the Mini-Mart. She retired about five years ago. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Pegump of Aberdeen, SD., and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Alice M Barrows will be held at the Cloyd Chapel Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p. m Cremation has taken place and interment will follow at a later date. E. Barrows, 77 former Central Montana Sunday School missionary, died suddenly Wednesday of a heart attack while playing chess with a friend in Oakland, CA, according to word received here. A great lover of chess, Mr. Barrows was playing a game with an old friend with whom he used to carry on chess games through the mail, when he died, his son Frank of Lewistown said here today. He will be buried Tuesday at North Loup, NE. next to his wife, who died in Lewistown in 1928. Mr. Barrows was born December 27, 1873, in Illinois and spent his boyhood in the Dakota territory. Later he went to Nebraska where he married Rosella Thomas. In 1905 he came west to Idaho and homesteaded in 1910 at Fort Benton. He came to Lewistown in 1919 as a Sunday School missionary and lived here until 1928 when he moved to North Dakota and then to Alaska. For the past few years he has been staying with his daughter, Mrs. Harry (Emma) Brubaker in Sheldon, IL. Recently he went to visit a son, Eugene in Saugus, CA. He is survived by two sons, Frank of Lewistown and Eugene of Saugus, CA; four daughters, Mrs. Brubaker, Mrs. Roland (Ruth) Owen of Lincoln. NE; Mrs. Cloyd Ingerson of North Loup, NE and Mrs. Douglas (Bessie) Brown near San Francisco; two brothers Alfred E. Barrows of Washington, D C and Truman Barrows of Hansen NE. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Barrows left Lewistown this morning to attend the funeral at North Loup, NE. ************************************************************************************ WILLARD F (FRANK) BARROWS Willard F (Frank) Barrows, 61, Lewistown, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Central Montana Hospital Thursday evening He was born November 15, 1901 in Grand Island, Nebraska, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard E Barrows. He moved to Montana in 1910 with his patents and received his early education in Fort Benton and in 1919 he moved to Lewistown He graduated from Fergus County High School in 1923 and attended Montana State University. He returned to Lewistown and worked for the Montana Lumber Company for eight years and in 1935 he went to work as a policeman for the city of Lewistown retiring in 1955 as assistant chief. He returned to work for Montana Lumber Company until 1971 when he retired. He continued to make his home in Lewistown until the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Alice M Becker on May 6, 1940 in Butte. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. Moose Lodge, Al Bedoo Shrine of Billings, the York Rite Bodies, and Masonic Lodge No 37 of Lewistown. He is survived by ha wife Alice of Lewistown; one brother. Fergus County Harold Bauman, 84, a longtime Roy rancher, died Friday morning in Billings hospital after an extended illness. He was born Feb 15, 1905, at Portage, WI, the son of Fred and Agnes Bauman. He moved to Montana in 1907 and lived in Hinsdale until 1909 when he moved to Washington to make his home. In 1913, he moved to a homestead 16 miles east of Roy and made his home in the Roy area most of his life. He received his early schooling in the Valley View School near Roy and attended Roy High School. · He was a member of the Lewistown Eagles Lodge. Survivors include a nephew, Monte Lund of Roy: a niece, Dolly Smith of Grass Range, two great-nephews, Tye Lund of Roy and Vaughn Smith of Grass Range: and three great-nieces, Terrena Young of Roundup; Joan Berg of Lewistown and Jacqueline Rich of Winifred. Beatty of Lewistown, 70, died Tuesday morning at Valle Vista Manor after an illness which lasted two years. He was born in Lewistown August 19, 1911, the son of John and Ella Beatty. Beatty was a graduate of Fergus High School and later attended college in Los Angeles for two years. After his schooling he farmed and ranched with his family at Fergus He served in the army during World War II. Following his military service he returned to Fergus and stayed there, retiring in 1979. In later years he had some business interests in Idaho Beatty was preceded in death by his mother in 1948 and his father in 1975l He is survived by his stepmother. Beckman was born September 8, 1911 at Rhame, ND, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Beckman He received his schooling in North Dakota and spent his early life there. He started playing for dances at the age of 13 playing a pump organ He received his first accordion at the age of 15 and his first saxophone at 21. On August 28, 1937 Beckman was united in marriage to Evelyn Edwards at Buffalo. He lived with a cousin John Thom at Moore and was employed on various farms in the area. During World War H he was employed at the Navy Yards at Bremerton Washington. After the war he returned to Lewistown where he was employed as a mechanic until 1961. From 1961 until 1966 he worked for the city of Lewistown In 1966, Be went to work as a maintenance engineer for the Yogo Inn and was there until his retirement in 1973. Beckman played for many dances and social functions in the Central Montana area and was a member of the Eagles band and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp. He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Lewistown; four sons, Dale E. of Helena, John C. of Cascade, Scott R. of San Diego, California; and Edward A. of Fort Lewis, Washington; one daughter, Janis E. Sotelo of Washington Iowa; two brothers William of Belfield, ND, and Paul of Sturgis, SD.; one sister, Martha Clendenen of Amidon, ND.; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Fergus County Evelyn E. Beckman, 68, Lewistown died Sunday morning in a Great Falls hospital following a short illness. She was born August 17, 1915, in Buffalo, the daughter of John and Verna Edwards. She received her education in the Buffalo Schools, graduating in 1934. Upon completion of high school, she attended Old Intermountain College in Helena and one summer at Normal in Billings (now Eastern Montana College). Mrs. Beckman returned and taught at the Rock Creek School, south of Lewistown. August 28, 1937 she was united in marriage to Elmer Beckman in Lewistown. They lived at Moore and she taught at Buffalo during the 1940s. They moved to Lewistown and she worked as a waitress at the Yogo Inn and the Eagles Manor and a maid at the Yogo Inn. She continued to live in Lewistown following his death in 1980. While in Moore she was a member of the Moore Women's Club and Moore Methodist Women. She was also active in the United Methodist Church in Lewistown. Belding, 66 of Lewistown died early Saturday morning in a Billings hospital following a short illness. He was born November 11, 1916 in West Chicago, IL, the son of Wilbert D. and Edythe L. Belding. He received his education in Illinois and then attended Columbia University, studying broadcasting. He then worked for WGN in Chicago, then moved to Midland, TX and then to Fayetteville, AR. He moved to Lewistown in 1947 to work for the Bennett brothers when they built KXLO. Belding worked there three years and then became manager of the Lewistown-area Chamber of Commerce. He held that position for 23 years. In 1973, he went back to work for KXLO. He was employed there until the time of his death. During World War II, Belding served with the Air force. He was united in marriage to Ellen Hughes in Lewistown November 11, 1947. He was member of the first United Presbyterian Church of Lewistown, an active member of the Lewistown Kiwanis Club and a past president. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion of Lewistown. He was the secretary of the Highway 200 club. Belding is survived by his wife Ellen of Lewistown; one son, Bob of Ridgecrest, CA; one brother, Robert of Elgin, IL. Two grandchildren and four nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Lee S. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Winifred; a director of the Snowy Mountain Wool Pool; a volunteer and First Responder for the Winifred Ambulance; a member of the Eagles; and also taught hunter's safety. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing pool. John enjoyed visiting with others and touched everyone he met in a very special way. He was born September 16, 1922, in Absher, Montana, to parents Frederick Sr. and Margaret (Daly) Bergman. Fred graduated from high school in Lewistown, Montana, and then worked for Inland Airlines in both Lewistown and Billings, Montana. During World War II and the Korean conflict, Fred served in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft navigator. He married Inez Larson in 1943 in Denver. After a short period of working for Western Airlines as station manager in Sheridan, Wyoming, he spent the rest of his working career as an air traffic controller employed by the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). During his career with the FAA he worked in Cleveland, Ohio, Livingston, Seattle, and Sheridan. After retiring in 1980, Fred and wife, Inez, lived in Sheridan and then moved to Yakima to be closer to their children. He spent the rest of his life there except for a one-year period spent in Oroville, California. Fred is survived by his wife, Inez of Yakima; son, Don and his wife, Debi of Bremerton; daughter, Judy and her husband, Jerry Roloson of Lynden; daughter, Jo Anne Clark of Los Angeles; son, Larry and his wife, Donna of Ellensburg; nine grandchildren; brother, Dean of Drummond, Montana; sister, Jeanette Van Voorhis of Oroville; sister, Bess Paul of Billings; and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He was born Sept. 9, 1911, in Rockford, IL, the son of Edward and Mary Bibeau. The family moved to a homestead in Phillips County, south of Malta, when he was an infant. At the age of nine, he assumed the responsibility as the man of the house following his fathers death. He married Mae Hardin in 1934 at Malta. The couple had two sons, Bill and Dick. He moved to Fergus County in 1938 where he worked in the mine at Ruby Gulch in the power house. He received certification as a diesel mechanic from the Chicago Institute of Technology in 1947. He owned and operated Bibeau's Diesel Service in Lewistown from 1952 until 1957. He then moved to Alaska and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration. He met Cecelia Hadella in Lewistown in 1961 and they married June 16, 1961, in Livingston. They lived in Anchorage, Alaska, until 1963 when they returned to Lewistown. He worked for the Air Force Seaman Team from Malmstrom. He also worked for local diesel shops until his retirement, due to illness, in 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He helped organized the Farmers Union at Roy, served on the school board and Fergus County Fair Board. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Roy and the Lewistown Eagles Lodge. She was born on August 6, 1933, to Reuben and Phyllis (Wheeler) Berg in Froid. She lived with her family in Froid where they farmed until the late 1940s. They then moved to Arlee where Edith graduated from high school in 1951 as valedictorian of her class. In 1963 she graduated from St. Joseph's School of nursing as an LPN and in 1983 she earned her RN degree from Miles City Community College. Edith was united in marriage to Gene Bousquet on July 22, 1951, in Missoula. Edith's heart left with Gene when he passed away in 1992. Edith and Gene lived in Arlee until 1955 where they did ranch work and sold Christmas trees. In 1955 they relocated to Lewistown where they did ranch work until 1957. Edith worked from 1963 to 1981 as an LPN at St. Joseph's Hospital and returned in 1983 as an RN to Central Montana Medical Center. In 1990, she worked at the Montana Center for the Aged until her husband's death in 1992. She returned to work in 1995 at the Valle Vista Manor and remained working there until her death. She loved hunting, camping and any outdoor activity. She loved reading and music and provided many hours of entertainment at the piano and with her accordion. She could cut a mean rug on the dance floor. Edith had the gift of gab and loved to travel and meet new people. Edith loved her children, grandchildren and celebrated being a great-grand-mother. Her door was open to foster children for many years and she ran a daycare center in the 1960s. She was involved in Girl Scouts, PTA and helped get boys baseball restarted in the 1960s. Most of all, Edith loved being a nurse and strived always to make others' pain and suffering less. She was loved by those she cared for. Survivors include four daughters: Kathy (Ron) Balas, Gina (Uriah) Womack, all of Lewistown, Cheri Finnicum of Shepherd, Lorrie (Dave) Pellegi of Kellogg, Idaho; and three sons: Tim (Ina) Bousquet of Culbertson, Jim (Sandee) Bousquet of Williston, North Dakota, and Kim (Kelly) Bousquet of Martin, South Dakota In addition, she is survived by grandchildren: Caleb, Maghan and Gillian Balas; Jacob, Caitlin, Joseph and Calina Finnicum; Tricia and Bryan Gatz; Tylene and Misty Bousquet; Kyle, Kevin and Samantha Bousquet; Jessica, Keinen, Kahlan and Jenna Bousquet; Jaecee and Breanna Dirkson; and Cheyenne Womack; and great-grandchildren: Trysten Bousquet and Abigail Ruth Gatz; one brother, Dennis Berg of Lewistown and one sister, Ruby McDonald of Billings; and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and soulmate, Gene; her parents; one brother, Roger Berg; and a son-in-law, Brent Dirkson. A Memorial Service for Edith Bousquet will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 16, at 3 p.m. Cremation has taken place and internment will take place at a later date. Mrs. Bowser was born June 3, 1899 at Redwood Falls, Minn., the daughter of James and Katherine Dobeus. She received her early schooling in Minnesota and in 1913 she moved to Roy where she finished her schooling. On Nov. 26, 1924 she was united in marriage to William E. Bowser in Hilger. He preceded her in death in 1963. After her marriage, Mrs. Bowser and her husband operated a ranch near Roy and in 1927 bought the home ranch at Roy where she lived until 1963 when she moved into Roy to make her home. For the past nine months she had been in the Central Montana Nursing Home. Mrs. Bowser was a member of the Roy Women's Club, the Sacred Heart Alter Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors, all of Roy. She is survived by two sons, James R. and William E. Jr., both of Roy; one sister-in-law, Mabel Dobeus of Chicago, Ill., five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, one son Jerry in 1933, two brothers and five sisters. Bowser , 84, well-known retired farmer of Roy and resident of that section for over 31 years, died at St. Joseph's Hospital about 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, following a rather prolonged period of failing health. Born in Fayette County, Iowa, June 18, 1859, Jeremiah B. Bowser with his wife and took up considerable farm holdings near Roy, and had continued to make that section of the county his home since. Owing to advancing age, he retired some time ago from active farming operations and moved into Roy to make his home. He was brought to the local hospital for special care several weeks ago. He is survived by his widow, Hannah, and many friends and neighbors throughout the Roy section. Funeral plans were not announced Thursday. BOWSER High mass of requiem services marked the funeral of Benjamin B. Bowser, prominent retired rancher of the Roy section who died at the St. Joseph's hospital Thursday. The Rev. Father P. J. Treacy conducted the impressive services, with Mrs. Art LaSalle singing the mass at St. Leo's Catholic church Monday morning. There were many floral remembrances and spiritual bouquets and following the services at the church quite a number accompanied the casket to the Catholic cemetery, where burial was made. Casket bearers were J. E. McKenna, Angelo Hicky, E. J. Coyle, Charles Bishop, Mike Meyers and Frank Stepan. A native of Iowa, Mr. Bowser came to Montana in 1912 and has resided continuously since in the Roy section. Lewistown, MT William E. Bowser, Jr. a resident of the Central Montana area, died Wednesday at the veterans hospital in Fort Harrison after an extended illness. He was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Lewistown, the son of William and Hattie Bowser Sr. He received his schooling in the Roy schools, graduation from the Roy High School in 1943. He entered the service in 1944, serving with the U.S. Army until his discharge in 1946. He then returned to Montana for a short time. Bowser was self employed as a tree faller in the lumber industry, and worked in Washington, California, Idaho, Oregon, and Montana. He retired in 1981, and returned to Montana where he had made his home until the time of his death. He is survived by one brother, Jim of Roy; 4 nephews, and one niece. They ranched there until his death in 1959. She continued to live in Roy and in 1961 she was married to Gene Brown in Lewistown. She continued living in Roy until her death. Burke, 84, of Lewistown died of natural causes Thursday evening in the Central Montana Medical Cater. She was born July 18, 1908, in Lewistown, the daughter of Frank and Augusta Jacobson. She received her education in Lewistown, graduating from Fergus High School. She then attended and graduated from Eastern Montana College and returned to Lewistown and taught school. On May 15, 1931 she was married to Blake Burke in Lewistown. They lived in Lewistown and in 1942 moved to California She worked for Sears and Roebuck while in the Los Angeles area, returning to Lewistown in 1950. She had made her home in Lewistown until the time of her death. Mabel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Lewistown. Byerly was born June 10, 1908, in Chicago, the son of Fred and Laura Byerly. He attended elementary school in Chicago and graduated from high school in Virginia, Minnesota, where he worked in the open pit iron mine and in a sawmill. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's in business administration, where he played ice hockey on two national champion teams, and earned his master's in geography from the University of North Carolina. He married Louise Hanes in 1932 in North Carolina. He taught two years at UNC before Great Depression cutbacks cost him that job. He taught high school one year, then worked as a relief administrator with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. He moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1935, where he managed the Milwaukee Association of Commerce Research Bureau and to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1938, where he was executive vice president of the chamber of commerce. In 1940, he fulfilled a long-time goal to be his own boss and to be a newspaperman when he purchased the Thermopolis (Wyoming) Independent-Record. Soon after Pearl Harbor, he volunteered and served as a major in the Army Air Corps in many stateside bases and overseas in Iceland. After the war, he was elected to the Wyoming Legislature, where he served one term. Thanks to a tip from then Gov. Sam Ford of Montana, he learned that the Lewistown newspaper and printing shop was for sale. On May 1, 1947, he purchased the Lewistown Democrat News. In 1957, he sold the Lewistown business and returned to North Carolina as a professor in the UNC School of Journalism, where he worked until 1971. During that time he authored "Community Journalism," the first college textbook devoted to small town and rural newspapers and worked as a consultant for Copley Newspapers. In 1962 he resumed ownership of the Lewistown newspaper and in 1971 he "came home" with his wife, Scottie, whom he had married Dec, 26, 1967. He was active in many Central Montana community projects and served on the University of Montana, Montana State University and College of Great Falls president advisory councils, state chamber board, Montana Ambassadors and s a consultant for Roy Park of Park Newspapers. Byerly was president of both the Wyoming and Montana Newspaper Associations and was honored by the MNA in 1991 as "Master Editor/Publisher" He was past president of both the Lewistown and Chapel Hill, N.C. Rotary clubs and a member of Rotary, the American Legion, Elks and Eagles. He remained active in the Lewistown newspaper for more than 50 years and, despite his ill health continued to write an occasional editorial or story as recently as May. He was always grateful for the kindness and support of Central Montanans for more than five decades and often said if he had his life to live over again, "I'd be a newspaperman again."
