Roberta was born on October 1, 1914, the daughter of Robert Andrews and Minnie Belle (Gideon) McCabe in Buffalo. She attended the country school in Buffalo, graduated from Fergus County High School and attended Billings Business College. Roberta married Carrol A. Dahlstrom on Septemper 5, 1936, in Hobson. Together they raised one son and four daughters. Roberta's faith was strong and she was a longtime member of the Billings Bible Church. She loved teaching Sunday School and Bible Studies. Survivors include her son, Robert A. (Cass) Dahlstrom of Seattle; daughters, Linda D. (Richard) Stone of Severna Park, Maryland., Elaine D. (Richard) Braley of Derry, New Hampshire, Carolyn J. Bickford of Edmonds, Wash., and Lois C. (David) Essells of Billings; as well as eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation hours will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Her Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 5, 1999, at Dahl Funeral Chapel with interment in the Custer National Cemetery at Crow Agency, 2 p.m. Monday. ************************************************************************* Betty Lee Darrah - 1999 Surname: DARRAH, MC COLLUM, NAASZ, WEED, HARDY, STINGLEY Betty Lee Darrah Billings Gazette Vitals 1-28-99 Billings, MT LEWISTOWN - Betty Lee Darrah, 66, of Lewistown, died Friday in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings of cancer. She was born April 14, 1932, in Lewistown, the daughter of William A. and Marie McCollum. She received her education in Lewistown and then began working in Lewistown at various jobs. In 1952 she was united in marriage to Eugene Naasz. She worked as a waitress in several restaurants in Lewistown. On August 25, 1962, she was united in marriage to Larry Darrah in Roundup. She then attended Acme Beauty College in Billings to become a cosmetologist. After completing her schooling she worked with Lois Ann Weed in Lewistown. In 1969 she realized her dream of becoming self-employed and opened a beauty salon in the basement of her home. She operated this salon until October of 1998. Betty enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, arts and crafts, time with her family and life to its fullest. Betty was active in the Community Concert Association and Christian Women's Club. She is survived by her husband, Larry of Lewistown; two sons: Kenneth E. Naasz of Billings and William G. Darrah of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters: Laurice L. Darrah of Bozeman and Diane M. Naasz of Glasgow; one brother: Duane (Dewey) McCollum of Lewistown; an aunt and uncle, Betty and Don Hardy of Lewistown; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dawn C. Naasz; her parents; one brother, Marion McCollum; and one sister, Barbara Stingley. Memorial Services for Betty L. Darrah will be Saturday, February 13, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with burial to follow in the Central Montana Memorials Gardens of Lewistown. Mr. Davis was a pioneer, coming from Idaho trailing a bunch of horses, settled in the shadow of Black Butte thirty six years ago. He was a freighter for thirteen years between Fort Benton, Lewistown and Gilt Edge. Their children were all born at the homestead except one. Robert Bohyer officiating. Mrs. Deal died Friday in a Great Falls hospital after a short illness. She was born June 28, 1893 in Bemidji, Minnesota, the daughter of Jess and Lillie Smith. She was a graduate of Great Falls High School and the Academy of Minnesota. On May 25, 1914 she married Dr. Arter Deal in Lewistown He was a retail merchant. She operated Deals Craft and Gift Shop for 30 years. Mrs. Deal was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church and the Central Montana Medical Auxiliary She is survived by three daughters, Babbie Deal and Mrs. Ed Furnish, both of Lewistown and Mrs. R. W. Baker of New York City, New York; a foster son, Jack Stephenson of Great Falls; a brother George Smith of Santa Ana, California. Five grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1943, and one brother Robert in 1950. Burial will be in the Lewistown City Cemetery. He lived in central Montana a number of years, homesteading in the Moore area. He was born October 23, 1884 and came to this area with his parents in 1894. The family moved to Polson about 1910, Deranteay lived in that area since that time. He served in the United States Army during World War I. Among his survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Clara Sharp, Lewistown and Mrs. Delinda Peter of Long Beach, California and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sharp and her daughter Mrs. Lorraine Hoepner, Lewistown, attended the funeral in Polson Saturday. ****************************************************************************** Beulah (Bain) Derr - 1999 Surname: BAIN, DERR, WILHITE, WOLFE, ZIESMAN Beulah (Bain) Derr Billings Gazette Vitals 2-7-1999 Billings, MT LEWISTOWN - Beulah (Bain) Derr, 79, of Lewistown died Friday morning at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center in Lewistown of natural causes She was born July 29, 1919 in Arco, Idaho, the daughter of Oliver B. and Elsie (Wilhite) Bain. She received her education in Worland, Wyoming graduating from Washakie County High School in 1938. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Lyle J. Derr in Worland. They lived in various places in the United States settling in Seattle in the late 1940's. He preceded her in death in 1960. She continued living in Seattle until the mid 1960's when she returned to Worland. In the early 1970's she moved to Lewistown and worked at the Lewistown News Argus and then for BLM retiring in 1985. She continued living in Lewistown entering the nursing home in 1998. Beulah enjoyed knitting, sewing, quilting, playing cards and she had a great sense of humor, loving to tell jokes. She is survived by one daughter: Deborah Wolfe in Muncie, Indiana; one sister: Dorothy Ziesman of Lewistown; two brothers; Norman Bain and Ralph Bain both of Ogden, Utah; one granddaughter, Bethany Elise of Muncie, Wyoming and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Fergus County Etta B Deyoe, 81, long time resident of Lewistown, died Sunday evening at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness. She was born November 14, 1888, at Marysville, the daughter of Joseph T. and Alice Walton. She graduated from Fergus County High School in 1903 and Married Arthur Ridgeway in 1912. They homesteaded in the Everson community and resided there until moving to Lewistown in 1948. After her husband died she later married Frank Deyoe. Mrs. Deyoe was a member of the First Methodist Church in Lewistown and of the Easter Star Chapter at Denton. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lucille Erlandson, of Denton and Mrs. Hazel Wicks, of Lewistown; a son Duane Ridgeway, of Denton and nine grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Fred Walton, and a sister, Mrs. Ethel Thayer. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p. m. from the Creel-Gurnett-Retz Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Heath officiating. Dissly, 81, of Lewistown, died Sunday afternoon in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings of cardiac arrest. She was born November 9, 1917, in Dousman, Wisconsin, the daughter of James and Mae (Brennen) Stocks. She received her education in Wisconsin, graduating from high school at Oconomowoc High School, and then graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing. She worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago before entering the U.S. Army in 1943. She served in the European Theatre. She was discharge in 1945 as a Captain. She returned to Wisconsin. On January 19, 1952, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Dissly in Fort Hood, Texas. They lived in Missoula and he completed his education. They then made their home in Lewistown. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital and was one of the first Intensive Care Nurses in the Intensive Care Unit in St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1976 she began working for the Public Health Department. She retired in the early 1980s. Her husband preceded her in death in 1988. Bernette was very active in St. James Episcopal Church. She enjoyed quilting and reading. She was a member of the University of Wisconsin Nurses Alumni Association, Daughters of the Nile and the P.E.L. Chapter J. She is survived by one son, Paul of Bozeman; one daughter, Mary Cruzan of Billings; five grandchildren and two nephews. Her parents and one brother preceded her in death. Distad HELENA - Allen E. Distad, 66, of Helena, passed away Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings. Allen was born Oct. 23, 1933, in Lewistown. The son of Gilbert O. and Edith G. (Hull) Distad, he grew up in Roy, graduating from Roy High School in 1951. Al married Sonja H. Anderson on Aug. 27, 1960 and had four children. He left the Lewistown area in 1965 and moved to Helena. Al was a mechanic and worked for Chrysler, later opening his own shop, Al's Auto Repair. Allen enjoyed hunting, four-wheeling, he loved Montana and country music. He is preceded in death by his father, and his brother, Gene Distad. Allen is survived by his son, Alan A. (Tony) Distad; three daughters, Brenda Doherty and Sandra Hartman of Billings and Patty Arnold of Yakima, Wash.; his mother, Edith (Hull) Distad of Lewistown; two brothers, Richard Distad of Salt Lake City and Ted Distad of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born September 9, 1930, in Lewistown, the son of Gilbert and Edith (Hull) Distad. He was reared on the home ranch east of Roy, and attended nearby Valley View Grade School. He graduated from the Roy High School in 1948. He is survived by his son, Gary Lee, his mother Edith Distad, Lewistown; three brothers, Richard, Great Falls, Allen, East Helena, and Ted, Havre. He was born in Hayfield, MN, April 3, 1891. He attended school in Minnesota and came to Montana in April of 1913 at the age of 21. He filed a homestead claim east of Roy, which became his ranch for 49 years. Since retiring in 1962, he and his wife have made their home at 915 7th Avenue North in Lewistown. On November 9, 1929 he married Edith Grace Hull. Distad was a member of the American Legion, World War I Veterans, and the Eagles Lodge. Survivors include the widow, four sons, Gene, Lewistown; Richard, Great Falls; Allen, Helena; Ted, Havre; seven grandchildren; two brother Oscar, Chicago; Raymond, Lewistown; two sisters, Emily Beesly, Minneapolis; and Mae Boe, Hayfield, MN. He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at the Creel-Gurnett-Retz Chapel Tuesday at 2 pm, with Pastor Sheridan Erickson, Zion Lutheran Church officiating. After being widowed in 1949, she briefly lived in Great Falls and then returned to Brady and later moved to Conrad. DISTAD Lewistown News-Argus Lewistown, MT. 3-2-1988 Raymond T. Distad, 98, longtime Central Montana area resident, died Wednesday morning at Valle Vista manor after an extended illness. He was born July 4, 1889 at Hayfield, MN., the son of Olie and Louise Distad. He received his schooling at Hayfield and spent his early life there. In 1913 he moved to Montana and lived at Conrad where he worked for his Uncle. In 1915 he moved to the Roy area where he homesteaded and lived until 1964 when he moved to Lewistown to make his home. On June 24, 1930 he married Mildred D. Nelson in Lewistown. She preceded him in death in 1976. Distad was a veteran of World War One, having served with the U.S. Army in France. He was a member of the American Legion and World War One veterans. He is survived by one sister, Mabel L. Boe, in Hayfield, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services for Raymond T. Distad were held at the Cloyd Funeral Home Friday morning at 11:30 with Roger Cripe of Jehovah Witnesses officiating. Organist Barbara Harchenko accompanied soloist Loyd Bowen on "Keep your Eyes on the Prize" and The Resurrection-God's Loving Provision". Pallbearers were Robert Abbott, Toby Baukeman, Ivan Erdman, Robert Montgomery, Todd Paler and John Van Engen. Fergus County Gertrude Dodd of Lewistown, 84 died Friday afternoon at Central Montana Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Bartlett, Nebraska on November 23, 1897, the daughter of George and Lillie Martin. She received her schooling there and married Charles Taylor. They resided in Nebraska until the 1930s, when they moved to Martin, SD. Taylor died there in 1932 and Mrs. Odd moved back to Nebraska. She later married James Odd, coming to Lewistown in the later 1930s. She had resided here since that time. Before her retirement about 20 years ago, Mrs. Odd worked at the Culvert Hotel and at the Gem Café for a long time. Survivors include two sons, C. R. She was born May 4 1910 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and came to the Denton area with her parents in 1916. She received her education in Denton schools, graduating from Denton High School in l929. On June 3, 1929, she was united in marriage to John Donaldson in Lewistown and they farmed east of Denton until his death in 1982. She continued to live on the farm until the time of her death. Mrs. Donaldson was a member of the Methodist Church and the Denton Ceramic Club She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Daniel and Kenneth, and is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Rusty (Phyllis) Senef of Utica; two sons, Howard Donaldson and Harold Donaldson both of Denton; one brother, Harold Gilkey of Denton; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was born November 21, 1897, at Cambridge, IL, to James and Edith Crouch, and she received her schooling in IO. She later married George A. Donaldson on December 29, 1921 at Moorehead, MN. After their marriage, they moved to Denton and farmed east of there. After he husband died in 1966, Mrs. Donaldson moved into Denton and had lived there since that time. The past six years, she was living in and out of nursing homes. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a past president of Circle Peace, and was very involved with the Denton Community Methodist Church, WSCS, and the Denton Garden Club. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother. She is survived by one son, Duane Donaldson of Denton; two daughters, Marian Dacus of Denton and Doris Chamberlain of Helena; two sisters, Ethel Quinn of Sun City West, AZ, and Bess Stonner of Albany, CA, ; of brother frank Crouch of Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Died with pneumonia at the family home on Cunningham Ridge, Fergus County, Montana. ********************************************************************* TOM DOWEN Lewistown Paper 6-18-1991 Tom Dowen, 86, a Lewistown resident since 1926, died Tuesday, June 18, at the Central Montana Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 9, 1904, in Chinook. Mont., a son of Rupert and Mildred Dowen, and received his education in Chinook. In 1918, he went to work for the Ford Garage in Chinook. On Nov. 29, 1923, he was united in manage to Grace Hutchinson in Fort Benton. In 1926, they moved to Lewistown and Mr. Dowen started the Dowen Chevrolet Auto Dealership. His dealerships were located in several places in Lewistown until 1939 when he sold the Chevrolet dealership and went into the Oldsmobile auto dealership. He was the owner/operator of Dowen Motors, which handled Oldsmobile, Cadillac and GMC trucks. He sold the dealership in 1968 and retired. During his years in the auto business, he served on the National Dealer Council for General Motors Corporation. He served on the state and national boards of the American Cancer Society and on the board of the Lewistown Area Chamber of Commerce. He was on the building committees at the Community Hotel and the Central Montana Hospital. In the 1940s, he served on the Board of School District No. 1 and was its chairman. Mr. Dowen was a member al the Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge, Rotary Club, Lewistown Lodge No. 37, A.F. & A.M., serving as Master in 1931, and was Dean of Past Masters at the time of his death. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Don (Nancy) Poush of Lewistown; two sons, Tom Dowen, Jr., of Chicago. IL., and Charles N. Dowen of New York, NY.: three granddaughters: Sarah Green of Great Falls, Laurie Curtiss of Concord, CA, and Beth Dowen of Minneapolis, MN.; five grandsons: Douglas Poush of St. Clairsville, OH, Kent Poush at Seattle. WA., Tom Dowen, III, of Seminole, FL., Eric Dowen of Chicago, IL., and John Poush of Anaconda; Two sisters, Alta Mallon of Lewistown and Helen Hebert of Chinook: five brothers: Grover Dowen and James Dowen, both of Havre, Frank Dowen of Cottonwood, AZ., Val Dowen al Everett, WA., and Jennings Dowen of Caldwell, ID: five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife, Grace, in 1988: one son, Richard, in 1951: and by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services for Tom Dowen will be held Monday, June 24, at 2 p m at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Gordon E. Parke officiating. The casket will be open far viewing until the time of the funeral. Interment will be in the Lewistown City Cemetery. Memorials to the Central Montana Medical Foundation are preferred by the family and may be left at the funeral home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, at the Montana Mental Health Chapel with interment in the Lewistown City Cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge. *************************************************************************************************** Edward A Dunn Lewistown paper 6-20-1990 Edward A. (Ed) Dunn, 84, of Lewistown, died early Tuesday morning at his home of natural causes. He was born October 4, 1905, in Fernie, B. C. Canada, the son of William and Annie Dunn. They moved to Wenatchie, Washington in March of 1970 and to Seattle in 1908. He started his schooling in Seattle and then homesteaded in Roy in 1914. He attended school at Joslyn near Roy and one year at Fergus County High School. He then worked at the Wass' General Store in Roy and on May 16, 1935, he was united in marriage to Alice Brown in Lewistown. They lived at Roy until 1938 when they moved to Lewistown and worked as a painter with Louie Mitten. He later worked at the United States Gypsum Plant at Heath and in 1945 he went to work at Melchert's and later Yetter's Bakery. In 1960 he went to work as a custodian at Fergus High School, retiring in 1970. Ed also worked 20 years until 1979 as the custodian for the First Presbyterian church in Lewistown. Ed sang in the Presbyterian Church choirs in Roy and Lewistown for 50 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lewistown, Friendship Lodge 139 AF&AM and Marie Chapter #36 O. E. S. He is survived by his wife Alice of Lewistown; one son Richard of Florence, Montana; one daughter Mrs. Glenn (Dolores) Scoville of Richland center, Wisconsin; four brothers; David of Seattle, Washington; Leonard of Olympia, Washington; Henry in California and Cecil in Scocia, New York; two sisters, Mrs. Ronald (Mildred) Biggerstaff of Lewistown and Elsie Pierce of Seattle, Washington. Along with eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Edward A. Dunn will be held Friday at 11 a m in the first Presbyterian Church with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lewistown. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
