He was considered an authority on local history and many people consulted him on information about the past. Having lived from covered wagon days to the time when man walked on the moon. Jackson saw many changer in his lifetime. He was born May 9. 1883, at Muir City in the Gallatin valley east of Bozeman the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert George Jackson. The family came to Lewistown the following year in a covered wagon and camped for a time near what is now Lewistown's downtown area. They arrived here July 3, 1884, the night before the historical shooting of Rattlesnake Jake. Jackson's half brother was wounded in the shooting and a man in the party was killed. Jackson received his education in Lewistown and was a member of the first graduating class of Fergus County High school. He received his diploma on May 24, 1901. He married Julia Clifton in March, 1914, in Leslie, Michigan. They ranched east of town for many years Jackson and his brother were some of the first in this area to do summer following. He was well known for his great love of horses which he raised, along with cattle. Jackson composed ballad type poetry about the west's early days, which he knew so well, and often recited his poetry at gatherings.. He was a member of the Methodist Church Survivors include one son, Dorman Jackson; Jr. Fergus; two daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Julia) Snyder of Ruby Gulch and Mrs. Roberta Munroe of Billings; and five grandchildren He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, two brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 3:30 p m, at the Cloyd Funeral Chapel with Rev. Arthur Heath, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Born Dec. 1, 1924, in Monroe, Washington, the daughter of Edward and Gladys Kalal, she moved with her family to Roy, Montana, at the age of two. She graduated from Roy High School and attended Montana State University, where she received a BS degree in nursing. She did her nursing. internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lewistown and was interim Director of Nursing at Billings Deaconess Hospital in the late 70s. She was employed at the Montana Center for the Aged in Lewistown until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of the National Registered Nurses Association, Montana State University Alumni Association, Moore Women's Club and the Methodist Church in Moore. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and sewing. Survivors include two sons, David Jakes of Stevensville, and Doug K. Jakes of White Sulphur Springs; two granddaughters, Wendy and Aimee: two brothers, Perry Kalal of Roy, and Dick Kalal of Lewistown: and her mother, Gladys Folda of Lewistown. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Kalal. Graveside services for Edith Joan Jakes will be held Wednesday, March 14, at 11 a.m at the Beaver Creek Cemetery, with Rev. He was born at Hepner, Oregon, on June 8, 1909 to John and Ruth Ralston Jasper. The family moved to Denton when he was 4 years old and he attended school there. Jasper was a minister for the Christian Nondenominational Fellowship for 32 years until his retirement He also did carpentry, painting and work at Yellowstone National Park. Johnson (Pollard), 86, a Montana resident all of her life, died of natural causes Saturday evening, February 7, in the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center after a brief stay. She was born January 17, 1912 in Roscoe, South Dakota, the daughter of Richard & Emily Komarek. The family moved to a homestead near Roy in 1913. She received her education in Roy area Schools. On August 8, 1932, she was united in marriage to Archie Johnson in Livingston. Her husband preceded her in death in 1951. She began working in the restaurant business in 1951, working in Lewistown at the Home Plate and the Bar 19. She operated a restaurant in Havre until returning to Lewistown. She moved to Lewistown taking care of her mother, while operating the restaurant at the Bar 19, where she was known for her corn fritters and prime rib. She retired in 1973, continuing to serve the community with the Lewistown Genealogy Society for more than 10 years. She was an avid arrowhead enthusiast, collecting a great number of arrowheads that have been given to the State of Montana Archeological Society. She is survived by one son Lawrence (Sidney) Johnson of Pasco, Washington; one daughter, Lillian Marie Damschen of Chico, California; two brothers, Joe (Speed) Komarek of Roy and Albert Komarek of Walla Walla, Washington; two sisters, Annie Smith of Grass Range and Lillian Staton of Clawson, Michigan; three grandchildren, Terry Akers of San Jose, California, Mark Johnson and Wendy Wheeler of Priest River, Idaho; two great grandchildren, Lisa Borchert of San Jose and Rachel Wheeler of Priest River and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnson was born Aug 3 at Winnett, the daughter of Benjamin and Pearl Stewart. She received her schooling at Winnett and Feb 14, 1948 married James Johnson in Lewistown. After her marriage she continued to Live at Winnett until 1970 when she moved to Lewistown to make her home Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Church and was active in her church until the time of her death She loved working with her flowers. Father Robert D. Bohyer of St. James Episcopal Church officiated. Mrs. Lilliam Coolidge sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Abide with Me", accompanied by Grace Pennock, organist. Marie chapter No 36, Order of Eastern Star conducted Burial rite. Mrs. Johnson died Wednesday morning at the Central Montana Hospital after a long illnesses. She was a patient in the Central Montana Nursing Home for the past six and a half years. She was born February 13, 1885 at Gilt Edge, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Owen Dunn. She received her schooling at Gilt Edge. On November 16, 1910, she was married to Harry E. Johnson in Gilt Edge. They moved into Lewistown in 1916 and she ran the Empire Rooms until retiring in 1948. Her husband died in 1950. Mrs. Johnson was a 50-year member of Marie Chapter No. 36, Order of Eastern Star, also belonged to St. James Episcopal Church, the Republican Party and the Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by a brother Ed Dunn of Lewistown and numerous nieces and nephews. Those who wish may give memorials to the Central Montana Hospital building fund. ************************************************************* Swan Johnson 1976 Lewistown paper 2-19-1976 Swan Johnson, 81 Lewistown died early Monday morning in the Veterans Administration Hospital at Fort Harrison after a long illness. He was born Feb. 21, 1891 in Sweden, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson He received his early education in Sweden He came to the United States at the age of 17 and settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, there he attended school to learn to drive tractors and other machinery. In 1909 he moved to Hettinger ND., where he lived until moving to Montana in 1913. He homesteaded 16 miles east of Roy. He enlisted in the service in 1919. After his discharge, he returned to his ranch at Roy, where he lived until his retirement in 1958. Since that time he had spent his winters in Arizona and his summers in Montana Johnson was a member of American Legion Post 96 of Roy, World War I Veterans, Friendship Lodge 139 A. F. & A.M. Lewistown York Rite Bodies of Lewistown and Al Bedoo Shrine of Billings. Survivors include a sister Mrs. Lena Peterson of Chicago; and two nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Cloyd Funeral Chapel with the Rev. George Barnhart of the First United Presbyterian Church officiating. No local service is planned Jones was born May 28, 1928 in Braggs, Oklahoma, and served in the Army and Navy He had worked for the railroad and ConAgra, Fergus Electric Co-op and American Legion Survivors include his, mother, Ids Mae Jones of Braggs; a daughter, Georgia Mae Jendro of Great Falls: sons, Gary Lee Jones of Cocolalla, Idaho, and Luke Lee Jones of Lewistown: sisters, Janice Petrie and Bertie Faye Metzger, both of Braggs; brothers, Burl of Texas. Chink was born May 16, 1918, in Ismay, Montana, to Charles Emmett and Mable Hunter Jordan, the seventh of nine children. He attended schools at Ismay and St. Martins Academy in Sturgis, South Dakota. From May 21, 1942, until December 20, 1945, he served in the U.S. Army, spending much of that time in the Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific, American Theater, Philippine Liberation with a Bronze Star, Good Conduct and Victory Medals. Chink worked at numerous jobs which included the McNulty Ranch on the Missouri River, the PN Ranch at Winifred, Mont., a wild west show that took him through the eastern U.S., Spike Van Cleave's at Melville, Montana, Glacier Park Saddle Horse Company as a wrangler, construction on the Alaskan Highway, gathering of wild horses in Nevada during 1947; and in 1949 he came to the Birney, Mont., area to work with his brother Matt's widow, Ruth. They were married on December 31, 1976, in Tucson, Arizona. Chink retired and moved to Sheridan around 1984 where he resided until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Margaret Rose, Sarah Elizabeth (Sadie), Mary Frances; his brothers, Mathew, Michael, David and Daniel; his wife, Ruth Winans Jordan in 1994; and one grandchild, Matthew Benedict in 1998. Chink is survived by one brother, Larry (Helen) of Billings, Mont.; numerous nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild: Katy (Jerry) Lunde, Levi and Lacey of Birney; Will Benedict of Birney and son, James Zachery; Mary (Roger) Zier, Tabitha, Katy Ruth, Chance, Kirsty and Shelby of Kirby; Ethan and Drew, children of Matthew Benedict; and great-great-grandchild, James Marion, son of James Zachery Benedict. Private committal services will be held at the New Moon Family Ranch at a later date. **************************************************************** Erwin Judd Lewistown paper 6-21-1976 Erwin Judd, 96, Lewistown resident for more than 70 years died Monday evening at Central Montana Hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a m at Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel, with Rev. George Barnhart officiating. Masonic services will be conducted by Lewistown Masonic Lodge No. 37 AF&AM . Interment will be in the Lewistown City cemetery. Judd was born November 21, 1879, in Madison, Ohio, the son of Zeriah and Eliza Judd. He received his schooling in Madison and Cleveland, Ohio. He lived in Madison until the age of 12 when the family moved to Cleveland. They moved then to Utica where Judd worked for the Country Store. He moved into Lewistown in 1899, worked for the Day House as a clerk, then moved back to Utica in 1900. The following year he started selling life insurance and real estate. Judd returned to Lewistown in 1905, where he continued selling insurance until November 1975. He was a police magistrate in Lewistown for years, from 1945-1965. He also served as justice of the peace from 1946 to 1960. Judd was married to Lula Shufelt April 12, 1911, in Livingston. She is his only survivor. He was a member of Lewistown Masonic Lodge No. 37 AF&AM. ******************************************************************** Lula Belle S. The pallbearers were Frank Poetter, Robert Brassey, George St. Peter, Frank Southworth, Robert Greene and Rudy Hruska. Mrs. Judd died Saturday at the Central Montana Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a charter member of Marie Chapter No. 36 OES and the Lewistown Garden Club. She was born Feb. 21.1882 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin., the daughter of Albert and Jeruha Shufelt She came to Montana October 2, 1883 with her parents and they farmed and ranched on Casino Creek south of Lewistown. She was schooled at Casino Creek and in the Culver Studio building. She was united in marriage to Erwin Judd April 12, 1911 in Livingston. After their marriage they lived in their home on Fifth Avenue for 65 years. She sold the home in 1978 and moved into the Eagles Manor.
