KAARO Lewistown News 7-5-1979 Lewistown, MT James W. Kaaro, 62, well known trick roping artist and former Fergus County Sheriff, died Saturday evening following a performance at Hamilton. He collapsed while performing at the banquet of the annual convention of Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association and died shortly aterward in the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m at Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel, with Rev. Arthur I Schroeder officiating. Interment will follow in the Lewistown City cemetery with military honors at graveside by Lewistown American Legion Post no 16. Kaaro died just one day after his retirement as a wage investigator for the Montana Department of Labor. He was living at Belgrade at the time of his death. He was born June 21, 1917 in Great Falls, the son of John and Ellen Kaaro. He was raised in the Fergus area and attended Lewistown schools. He was married to Shirley Hansen July 30, 1973 in Sheridan, WY. Kaaro broke and trained horses in Central Montana after leaving school, then worked two summers on a dude ranch in California. He saw his first trick roper at a rodeo there and practiced until he became a professional himself. Kaaro enlisted in the US cavalry in 1939. He was disbanded about the time the US entered World War II. When the change was made to mechanized units, Kaaro injured his leg riding a motorcycle and spent more than a year in a hospital. When he returned to duty, he entertained the troops as a trick roper. After his discharge from the Army, Kaaro joined a wild west show in Georgia. He then traveled with Cole Brothers Circus, beginning in 1948, and then with King Brothers Circus. He performed as a roping artist, trick rider, and was also an animal trainer. Kaaro returned to Montana in 1953. He was in law enforcement from 1957-1971, serving two years as Fergus County Sheriff. He was then superintendent of the Montana Center for Aged until moving to Helena to work for the Department of Labor. He recently moved to Belgrade. Kaaro had performed as a trick roping artist throughout the United States and Canada. He was one of nine ropers invited to the only world championship contest ever held, sponsored by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City. He also performed once on the Johnny Carson's Tonight Show on television. Music was provided by Louise Lanford on the organ and Vi and Arthur Schroder sang, the song selections included, "No Tears in Heaven," "It's not an Easy Road" and "Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were Joe Hood, Jack Songer, Bud Grinheim, Sonny Smith, Larry Jordan and Don Pfau. Interment was in Lewistown City Cemetery with military honors. **************************************************************** Ruth A Kahler Lewistown paper 1-7-1978 Ruth A. Kahler, 94, Great Falls, former Central Montana resident, died Tuesday in a rest home in Great Falls. She was born in Illinois Dec. 5, 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Burgard. As a young child she went with her parents to Missouri and received her schooling there. She married John J Kahler in 1906 at Warrensburg; Missouri. They moved to Fergus in 1919 and engaged in farming. After his death in 1952 she stayed on the farm another six years, then moved into Lewistown where she worked nine years as a housekeeper. She moved to Great Falls in July, 1968, to be near her son Surviving are her son, Harry R. Kahler, Great Falls: a grandson. John W Kahler, Great Falls; and two great grandchildren Her funeral will be Friday at 2 p m in the Creel-Morrison-Retz Funeral Home in Lewistown. with Rev Gordon Parke officiating. Burial will follow in the Lewistown City Cemetery. ****************************************************************** PERRY KALAL Lewistown paper 9-1967 Lewistown, MT. Fergus County Perry Kalal, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry E. Kalal. formerly of Roy. drowned Monday morning when he apparently was caught in an eddy while attempting to swim across the Bitterroot river. The body was recovered Monday below the Buckhouse Bridge near Missoula. Perry was born in Lewistown July 2. 1949. He started elementary school in Roy and graduated from high school there last year. The family now lives at Missoula. Survivors include his parents; three sisters. Mrs. Linda Rasmussen of Ulm. Laurie Ann, Kathy and .Jacqueline of Missoula: two brothers. Danny and Keith: grandparents Mrs. Stanley Folda, Moore. Ed Kalal of Roy. Funeral services are pending in Lewistown. *******************************************************************8 Emma Kalina Lewistown paper 10-4-1972 Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Kalina 77, Lewistown, were held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. The Rosary was recited Tuesday evening at the Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel Pallbearers were Richard Koss of Hopkins, Minnesota; Robert Kalina, Lonsdale, Minnesota; Dave Kalina, Roy; Larry Kalina, Broadview; Duane Meyers, Lewistown; and Burleigh Allen, Billings. Mrs. Kalina died Saturday morning in Billings after an illness of four months. She was born Dec. 25, 1894 at Veseli, Minnesota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Cervenka. She received her education in Minnesota, She married Joseph W. Kalina Nov. 15, 1915 in Veseli. They homesteaded in the Roy area in 1916 and lived there until 1951 when they moved to Lewistown. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the Valley View Home Demonstration Club of Roy. Survivors include the widower of Lewistown; three sons, Richard J. Kalina, Milton W. Kalina and Donald J. Kalina, all of Roy; three grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Cervenka and Dr. Charles Cervenka of New Prague, Minnesota, and Joe Cervenka of Lonsdale, Minnesota, a sister, Anna Kalina of Lonsdale, Minnesota, and several nieces and nephews. **************************************************************** RICHARD J. KALINA Lewistown Paper no date Richard "Dick" Kalina, 74, died at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings Wednesday morning, April 14, following a lengthy illness. He was born August 26, 1918. in Roy, the son of Joseph and Emma Kalina. He received his schooling in Roy, graduating from Roy High School in 1937. He married Virginia Martin June 3, 1946, in Lewistown. He spent his entire life on the home ranch until his retirement to Roy in 1980. He was musically inclined and played drums for dances nearly every Saturday night. He started his musical playing with the Zahns, Harvey Fogle and Chet Larson and later played with the Stardusters, consisting of Dick, Virginia and Sonny and Norma Weingart. Dick helped with the financing of the Roy ambulance and assisted in purchasing the arena for the Roy Rodeo Club. He was always willing to assist anyone in the area who needed help. He was a member of the Moose and Eagles. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1972, his father in 1979 and his wife in 1980. Survivors include two brothers, Milton Kalina of Lewistown and Donald Kalina of Roy: his friend, Lucille Woody of Lewistown: and several nieces and nephews. A prayer vigil will be at 5 p. m. Sunday, April 18, at the Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel. Funeral services will be at St. Leo's Catholic Church at 1 p. m. Monday, April 19. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. ************************************************************** Virginia G. Kalina Lewistown paper 4-17-1980 Virginia G. Kalina, 61, a lifelong Central Montana resident. died Thursday evening at the Central Montana Hospital after a short illness. She was born May 16, 1918, in Lewistown, the daughter of Harry and Cora Martin. She was educated in Lewistown's schools. After her schooling she played piano with her father's orchestra for dances in the Lewistown area. She then joined the Kalina orchestra in 1945 and played with it until 1963. On Jun 3, 1946, she married Richard J. Kalina in Lewistown. She and her husband ranched east of Roy from the time of the time of their marriage until last January, when they retired and moved into Roy. They also played together with the Stardusters orchestra until the time of her death. Mrs. Kalina was a charter member of the Valley View Hone Demonstration Club and was active in the Fergus Women's Club and Sherman Circle No. 16, Ladies of GAR. She is survived by her husband; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Murna) Southworth of Lewistown and Mrs. Burleigh (Lois) Allen of Billings; two brothers. Harry DeLette Martin of Lewistown and Richard T. Martin of Woodburn. Oregon.; and several nieces and nephews.. Mrs. Kalina was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services for Virginia G. Kalina will be Monday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at the Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel. Pastor Daniel Wanders will officiate with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born Feb. 4, 1892 in Holly Springs, Iowa, and moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley H. Howe to Nebraska where she received her schooling, at the age of eight. She taught school two years near Cody, Nebraska, and then went to college at York, Nebraska She married Lawrence Clyde Kauth there Dec 27, 1911. In 1914 the couple took a homestead 22 miles east of Roy and lived there until 1933 when they moved to Roy. Mrs. Kauth bought a restaurant and hotel in Roy in 1940 and operated it until June 1943 when she moved to Anchorage, Alaska. She married Murray A. Cottrell Aug. 10, 1943 in Alaska. The couple operated a well-drilling rig in the Roy vicinity until 1955. Cottrell died Aug. 3, 1955. Mrs. Cottrell married Virgil W. Kegen Dec 27, 1957 and had lived in Lewistown since then. She was a member of Waverly Presbyterian church and the Eagles Auxiliary. Besides her widower she is by survived by four daughters Mrs. Ruth Woodiwiss Mrs. Ava Zahn, Mrs. Lucille Komarek Roy: and Mrs. Edythe Oquist of Seattle; three sisters, Mrs. Ava Bainard, Malaga Washington: Mrs. Edna Dunn Oakland, California, and Mrs. Francis Williams, Seattle; a brother, Gig Harbor, Washington; 11 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was born Dec 4, 1882, in Klatovi, Czechoslovakia, and received her schooling in the old country. She came to the United States in 1914 and settled in Lisbon, ND. After her marriage to James J. Kellner August 14 1914 in Lisbon, she moved to a homestead northeast of Roy and made her home there until the time of her death After the death of her husband in 1957 she lived with her son. Immediate survivors include her son, James Kellner of Roy and a brother, Anton Marek of Czechoslovakia. (Archie) Kimpel 81, of Lewistown died early Monday morning in Valle Vista Manor of natural causes He was born July 21, 1912 in Hingham, Montana the son of Gerhard & Clara Kimpel. He received his education in Hingham graduating from high school there. He then attended Gonzage University in Spokane and the University of Montana receiving his degree in pharmacy, He then came to Lewistown and went to work for Seiden Drug. On Sept 15, 1941 he was united in marriage to Ruby E. Wojtowick in Lewistown. He entered the U.S. Navy in July of 1942 serving during World War II. After his discharge in 1945 he returned to Lewistown and purchased Seiden Drug. She preceded him in death in 1951. In 1979 he was united in marriage to Winifred Smith in Lewistown. He sold Seiden Drug in the early 1980s ad then traveled and worked as a pharmacist around Montana. In the late 1980s they began traveling to Texas in the winter and spending the summers in Montana. He was a member of Elks Lodge, past president and member of the Eagles Lodge and Eagles Manor, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Good Sam Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity life member, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and St. Leo's Catholic Church serving on the Parrish Council. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Winifred of Lewistown; two daughters, Kathy Fleharty of Lewistown and Barbara Maxwell of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren, Joseph Fleharty of Missoula and Julie Mannin of Helena and two great grandchildren, Kallie Ann and Courtney Marie Mannin both of Helena. Kindschy died early this morning in St. Joseph's Hospital after a illness. He was born December 1, 1883, in Alma. WI. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kindschy, and received his education in Wisconsin. Kindschy came to Lewistown in 1904. Following his marriage to Emma Jenni January 16, 1913, in the Presbyterian church here, he farmed on Rock Creek. Later he homesteaded near Winnett where they resided until 1923. When they returned to Fergus county and purchased a ranch on Beaver Creek. He retired in 1952 and they moved to Lewistown He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge, Moose lodge and a charter member of the Farmers Union. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Grace) Deffinbaugh of Lewistown and Mrs. Harold (Marie) Johnson of Spokane. WA; two brothers, Walter at Lake Dora, FL. and Clarence of Denver, CO.: six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Emil Kindschy, former Lewistown mayor. Kippenhan Lewistown paper Oscar T. Kippenhan, 80, formerly of Lewistown, died Friday, Nov 13 at the Veterans Home in Columbia Falls after a lengthy illness. He was born June 25, l907 in Lamira, Wisconsin., a son of John and Amelia Kippenhan and received his education in Roundup Mont. Mr. Kippenhan lived in Lewistown for several years, where he did general carpenter work, home repairs and remodeling. He was known for his home-grown honey and was also a welder and an automotive repair work. He had resided in Havre for the last five years. Mr. Kippenhan is survived by his wife, Annie of Havre; two brothers and one sister. Graveside services for Oscar T. Kippenhan were held Wednesday, November. 18 at 11 a m. at the Lewistown City Cemetery with Rev Kenneth Olson officiating. Kittleson One of the longest living Central Montanans, Jessie E Kittleson, died at the age of 107 Wednesday evening in a local nursing home following an extended illness. She loved dancing, gardening and her family. She was born Nov. 26, 1880 in Homer. Minnesota, the daughter of George and Ruth Gardner. She received her education in Homer and Winnona, Minnesota. She married Louis Kittleson Dec. 23, 1899 in Winnona, Minnesota. They came to Montana in 1913 and settled in the Straw area He worked for the railroad and they operated the general store and post office He was postmaster until 1940 They continued to live in Straw until his death in 1948. She lived there with her only daughter until her death in 1958. Mrs. Kittleson continued to live in Straw until 1978 when she moved into Lewistown She lived in apartments in Lewistown until going to Valle Vista Manor in December of 1982. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three children, three sisters and two brothers She is survived by one nephew, Henry Gardner of Seattle. Wash.; two nieces, Cecilia Miller of Chicago. Knapp - 1990 Surname: KNAPP, MYERS Perry Solomon Knapp Lewistown Paper 10-6-1990 Lewistown, MT. Fergus County Perry Solomon Knapp, 90 died of natural causes Thursday, October 4 at Valle Vista Manor. He was born July 18, 1900, in Daggett, Michigan, a son of George W. and Mary Ellen Knapp. His formal education was interrupted when he went to work in a logging camps at the age of 13 to help support the family. Later they moved to Nebraska. After a time, he struck out on his own and worked at various jobs in several states. On arriving in Montana, he decided that was where he wanted to stay. He married Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Myers, February 20, 1943. He worked for the Water Conservation Board, which required moving around the state. The couple established a home in the Helena Valley, where they spent most their married life. Mr. Knapp continued to work for the State of Montana as a boiler and maintenance man, and for the Masonic Home in the same capacity. He later worked as a night watchman until his retirement at the age of 81. He was a gentle man and had a way with babies and animals. Eleven brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, who resides at Eagles Manor in Lewistown; son, Toby Knapp, daughter-in-law Paulette and grandson Asa Benjamin of Saundertown, Rhode Island; son Charles Knapp, daughter-in-law Connie, grandson Levi Solomon and granddaughter Alisa Rose of Helena; a sister-in-law Dorothy Knapp of Tekamah, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Memorial graveside services were held Saturday, October 6, with Roger Cripe of Jehovah's Witness officiating. Interment was in the Lewistown City Cemetery. The Creel-Morrison-Retz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. *******************************************************************8 Rose Knapp Lewistown paper 7-1-1992 Rose Knapp, 86 died the afternoon of June 27 at the Central Montana Medical Center after a short illness. She was born September 6, 1905, the daughter of Frank and Anna Martinec in Topeka, Kansas. She came to Roy area with her parents when they homesteaded in 1913 northeast of Bohemian Corners. After her marriage to Cyrill M. Knapp on February 10, 1923 in Glengarry, they farmed and ranched near Glengarry and Straw until 1936 when they purchased a ranch near Hilger. She stayed active in the operation of the ranch and had resided there until her death. She enjoyed gardening, and cooking and especially her grandchildren, who would spend the summer with her. She was also on the Roy Junction school board. Survivors include five sons, Stanley Knapp, Lewistown, Jerry Knapp, Steve Knapp and Franklin Knapp, in Hilger, and Albert Knapp, Great Falls; three daughters, Agnes Ricks, Orofino, Idaho, Alice Robinson, Puyallup, Washington, Lillian Pospisil, Millie Griffith, and Alvina Bawden, all of Lewistown, and Sylvia Lydia of Kansas; two brothers, Steve Martinec, Lynwood, Washington, and Louis Martinec, Albany, Oregon; 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and six great, great, grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1954, one daughter Betty, one grandson, one granddaughter; three brothers Ed. Henry, and Jim; and on sister Ruth. Funeral services will be from the Cloyd Chapel Thursday Afternoon at 2 p m. The Rev. Gordon Lindley of the Church of Christ will officiate with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. Mrs. Knight was born December 14, 1929 in Lewistown, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Corth. She received her education in the Roy Schools, graduating from Roy High School in 1948. She lived in various places in Montana after completing her schooling and also lived in South Dakota, Kansas and Louisiana. In 1971 she returned to Lewistown where she made her home and was employed by Buttrey's Food Store. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Lewistown. Born Feb. 7, 1900 in Clarks, Nebraska, she went to Puyallup three years ago from Lewistown. She had been in Lewistown for many years working as a bookkeeper for Cowan Brother Hardware in Hobson She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hobson. Her husband, James Knight, died in 1966. Survivors include one son, Robert Knight of Puyallup: four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Kolstad, 89, of Lewistown died Monday evening, Nov, 29, at Central Montana Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 22, 1904, at Larrimore, ND, the son of Christian C, and Anna S. Kolstad. He came with his family to Montana in 1908 where they homesteaded at Liberty County. He received his education at Prairie Rose School in Liberty County. He married Bessie Violett in June, 1930, at Lawrenceburg, MO. He and Nellie Smith were married in Lewistown in 1989. He farmed and ranched in Liberty County until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his first wife, Bessie, in 1967. Komarek Lewistown paper 7-6-1989 Dean R. Komarek. 38, a Roy rancher, died Sunday morning of injuries sustained in an ultra-light airplane accident south of the Lewistown airport. He was born Jan. 3, 1951, in Lewistown the son of Joe D. "Speed" and Jessie Komarek. He received his grade school education country schools near Roy and attended Roy and Winifred high schools. He ranched in the Roy area all his life. He loved hunting, fishing and bike riding. He served with the Army Reserve for seven years and was a member of the Roy Post No. 96 a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 374 of Lewistown and the Roy Rodeo Club. On Sept. 25, 1971, he was married to Linda Benes in Lewistown. Survivors include his wife, Linda of Roy; a daughter, Pauletta, age 11; a son, Shawn, age 9, both of Roy; his parents, Joe D. "Speed" and Jessie Komarek of Roy; two sisters, Rita M. Lovejoy of Spokane, Washington and Jo Henderson of Great Falls; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Komarek Lewistown paper no date given George W. Komarek, 78, of Mobridge died Thursday morning in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings of natural causes. He was born June 16, 1919 on the family homestead near Roy, the son of Richard and Emily Komarek. He received his schooling in country schools near Roy. He worked on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army Seventh Calvary during World War II. He returned to Roy and the ranch following his discharge. He played in a band in Central Montana during the 1940's. On July 27, 1949 he was united in marriage to Edith Buttke in Lewistown, They continued to live on the ranch. In 1957 they opened the Lazy KX bar at Mobridge. In 1959 they moved to Mobridge, continuing to operate the ranch. He started the Mobridge Rodeo which was held for several during the 1960s. He was an avid rodeoer as a calf roper and bull dogger and was a member of the Roy Rodeo Club. He continued to operate the ranch and the bar until the time of his death. Komarek was a member of American Legion Post No. 96 of Roy and the Eagles Lodge of Lewistown, was a director of the Montana State Grazing Board and the Fort Peck Games Commission. He was an antique collector and was a hard worker all his life. He is survived by his wife, Edith of Mobridge; two brothers Speed of Roy and Albert of Walla Walla, Washington; three sisters, Mary Pollard of Lewistown, Lillian Stanton of Clawsen, Michigan; and Annie Smith of Grass Range and several nieces and nephews. She was born April 8, 1929, at Winnett, the daughter of Riley and Leona Fay Brown. She received her education at the Pleasant Plains School and attended Gilt Edge and Fergus High School. She lived her early life at Gilt Edge and on March 31, 1947, she was united in marriage to Joseph D (Speed) Komarek. After her marriage she lived north of Roy until a short time ago, when due to ill health she entered Valle Vista Manor where she spent the last 29 days of her life. Jessie was very active in her community and the Roy area. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, a charter member of the Valley View Extension Club, the Young Wives Club, the Gumbo Lillies Garden Club, was treasurer of the CowBelles, concessions of the Roy Rodeo Club, and was secretary-treasurer of the Roy Historical Society. She is survived by her husband of Roy; two daughters, Rita M. Lovejoy of Renton, WA, and Jo Komarek of Great Falls, MT; three brothers, John Brown of Harlowton, Charles, (Deck) Brown and James Brown of Lewistown; two sisters Dorothy Matovich of Grass Range, MT, and Alice Dunn of Richland City, WI; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born Jan 2, 1912 in Hastings, ND., the son of Nels J. and Emma Korwald. He moved to Lewistown at an early age and received his schooling in the Lewistown schools, graduating from Fergus High School. Mr. Korwald entered the service during World War II and served with the Army Air Corps. After his discharge, he returned to Central Montana and was employed as a mechanic in the oil drilling industry far many years. Since his retirement, Mr. Korwald made his home in Lewistown. He is survived by two brothers, Ed and Norris one sister, Alta and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and private graveside services will be held at a later time. She was born August 31, 1900 at Staples, Minnesota, the daughter of Mrs. And Mrs. Vincent Vasecka. She was educated in Minnesota, She came to Lewistown with her sister in the early 1920's, returning to Minnesota a few years later. On November 9, 1927, she was married to Joseph Kosir in Ogema, Minnesota. They both filed on homesteads east of Roy and ranched there until his death in May of 1959. She moved into Roy in the early 1960's. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Roy, the Roy Women's Club and the Roy American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include a brother Leslie Vasecka, Ogema, Minnesota, and several nieces and nephews including Mrs. Rolf Storlie of Lancaster, California. A longtime Roy resident, she was born July 11 1890, in Osielec, Poland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Medek. She and her family emigrated to the United States and lived in Laurence, Massachusetts. There she married William Kudzia and later moved to Montana where they homesteaded northeast of Roy in 1913. They raised cattle and farmed. In 1937 they moved to Harrison and later retired in Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded In death by her husband In 1953.
