He had lived in Roy since 1955. Machler was horn November 20,·1885, in VorderthaL Switzerland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Machler. He was educated in Switzerland and came to this country in 1905. He lived in Lansing, Iowa, until 1907 when he moved to Lewistown and filed on a homestead in the Denton area. He lived there until 1915 when he moved to the Chain Butte area on the Missouri River. He ranched there until his retirement in 1956 when he moved into Roy. He never married. He was a 50-year member of the Captain Scott Masonic Lodge 98, AF&AM, in Grass Range. He is survived by several nieces and nephew, including George, Bill and John Machler, all of Lewistown. A Masonic memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel. It will he conducted by the Captain Scott Masonic Lodge 98 AF&AM. A "Bill" Maddox, 65 of Butte and formerly of Grass Range and Lewistown, died Sunday afternoon in Butte. He was born April 23, 1909 in Lewistown, the son of Mr. & Mrs. William J. Maddox. He received his education in Lewistown and attended Billings Business College. He spent most of his early life near Grass Range. On August 21, 1938, he married Florence Lindsirand in Red Lodge. He moved to Salt Lake City and later to Butte, where he owned and operated Roland Thomas and Co., for over 20 years. He was a member of the Mount Mariah Masonic Lodge of Salt Lake City and the Rotary and Town Club in Butte. Mallon Lewistown paper dated 7-2-1984 Fred A Mallon, 77, of Lewistown died July 3 of a massive heart attack. He was born Dec. 1, 1906 in Maddux. Montana, the son of Adam and Antonie Mallon. He graduated from Santa Cruz High School in California and Montana State College at Bozeman. After receiving his graduate schooling at Washington University of St. Louis, MO., Mallon was appointed to teach architecture at Montana State College at Bozeman for one year. He then taught high school at Hardin in 1933 and l934. In 1935 he went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a civil engineer at Malta He was transferred to Lewistown 1954 and retired here in 1965. He married his wife, Alta, in Chinook December 31, 1936. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 374, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the United Methodist Church in Lewistown. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of Lewistown: his son, Gary Lee Mallon of Roswell, Georgia : his daughter, Carla Jean D'Hooge of Flagstaff, Arizona.: four grandsons; and one sister, Frances McDorney Chinook. The funeral was held July 7 at the Edward Funeral Home in Chinook with Rev. Emory Robotham officiating interment was in the Kuper Memorial Cemetery in Chinook. Fergus County Katherine Jane (Fogle) Marsh, 70, of Gardiner, died Friday afternoon, June 21 at Frontier Personal Care Home in Livingston. She was born October 21, 1925 in Roy, the daughter of Harvey and Myrtle Fogle. After graduating from Roy High School in 1943, she attended Montana State College in Bozeman for a year and then worked for a time during WW II in the ship yards in Puyallup, WA. On April 7, 1946 she married William C. Marsh in Roy. They moved Gardiner, where she worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's bulk fuel distribution business. Marsh began work with T. W. Services in Yellowstone Park as a bookkeeper in the mid-1970's and retired as T. W. accounts payable executive in the early 1990's. Her husband died in 1988. Marsh was a talented and accomplished ceramics worker and she greatly enjoyed crafting ceramics as both a hobby and a business. She also enjoyed gardening and stamp collecting. Survivors include a son and his wife, Gary and Diane Marsh of Liberal, Kansas; a Son Audie Marsh of Livingston; a daughter and her husband, Sheila and John Beard of Wilmington, OH; a brother, George Fogle of Billings; two sisters, Dorothy Kalina of Lewistown, and Elaine Drennen of Tacoma, WA; three granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Tuesday, June 25 at 1:30 p.m. in Franzen-Davis-Bebee Chapel. Dr. Bill Young of Gardiner Community Church officiated. Burial was in Park View Memorial Cemetery. ************************************************************************* OPAL IRENE JONES MARSH Lewistown paper died 4-10-1987 Opal Irene Jones Marsh, 81, former Roy and Lewistown area resident, died Saturday evening in a Livingston rest home after an extended illness. She was born July 5, l879 at Missouri Valley, Iowa, the daughter of, William and Edith Jones and received her early schooling at Missouri Valley. When she was 10 years old she moved to York, NE, with her parents: where she lived until 1913. In August of 1913, Mrs. Marsh immigrated to Montana in an immigrant railroad car to Armells. MT, then took a wagon train to a homestead 22 miles southeast of Roy She then attended the Edwards School of Business in Lewistown and on July 30, 1917 she married Clifford S. Marsh in Lewistown. After her marriage, Mrs. Marsh lived at Holter Dam and Great Falls before returning to the homestead near Roy in June of 1918, in August of 1981, she and her husband moved to the town of Roy where she lived until 1969 when she retired. In 1973, she moved to Lewistown where she lived until 1977 when she moved to Livingston to be near her daughter. She was active in community affairs in the Roy area, serving as a 4-H leader in the Valley View School area. She was president of the Roy Women's Club for many years, and was active in the Valentine Community Club. She was also a member of the Roy Presbyterian Church. One of the highlights of Mrs., Marsh's life was directing the community play called "Hans Van Smash" which featured the talents of the people in the surrounding area. She is survived by two sons, William C.(Bill) Marsh of Gardiner. and: Robert W (Bob) Marsh of Rancho Pales Verdes, CA.; two daughters: Adeline Dotson of Livingston, and Irene Stephens of Corvalis, OR; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents. one brother, one: sister and one son, Merle Dean. Sam returned to Hankinson, ND and returned the following years and filed adjoining Otto. Raymond also filed and later Clifford bought a relingquistment in the area. "Bill" Marsh served in the Army during World War II in Europe. After his discharge he and his wife moved to Roy where he was a mail carrier until 1959 when they moved to Gardiner in 1962 where he operated Conoco Bulk Plant. He was a member of American Legion. Martin, 72, Lewistown former Fergus county Treasurer and Commissioner, died Sunday afternoon after a long illness. Funeral services were held this morning at 10:30 at the Cloyd Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Arthur G. Heath, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Earl Dahlstrom sang, "The Lords Prayer" and "In The Garden", accompanied by Louise Langford, organist. Pallbearers were John Blixt, Paul Fishburn, Fred Helmer, Edward Kottas, Albert Pospisil and Ray Sisson. Burial was in the Lewistown City Cemetery with Military honors at graveside. Martin was born April 17, 1900, at Marshall, Minnisota the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis J. Martin. He received his education in Minnesota and served in World War I in 1918. He came to Montana in April, 1919 and farmed in Ross Fork area near Lewistown. He served on the local school board. He was treasurer of the AAA Farm Program from 1933-36 and was County Chairman of the program from 1936-38. On June 30, 1936 he married Bessie Blair Goodan at Everett, Washington. The couple moved to Lewistown in 1937. He served three terms as a treasurer of Fergus County Commission. He was Montana's first county chairman being appointed by the Petroleum County Commissioners in January, 1943. He was employed at the U. S. Gypsum Company at Heath for two years. Martin was a member of the American Legion for 53 years and served as post commander, district vice commander and Montana Department vice commander. He was a charter member and past commander of Barracks No 945, Veterans of World War I. He served as Fergus County chairman of the United States Savings Bond Program for 13 years. As a member of the Lewistown Kiwanis Club he served as club treasurer and on the board of directors for 20 years. He was treasurer of the Lewistown Federal Credit Union for 15 years. He was past president of the Lewistown Eagles Lodge and the Lewistown Outlook Club. Martin served as treasurer of the Fergus County Republican Central Committee for a number of years. He is survived by his widow of Lewistown; on son, Willard Goodan of Canogo Park, California; two brothers, Del of Lewistown and Arthur of Ross Fork; two granddaughters, Kelley and Maureen Goodan of Canogo Park; and several nieces and nephews. ********************************************** Anna Martinec Lewistown Paper no date given Mrs. Anna Martinec, 74, longtime Central Montana resident, died Tuesday in St. Joseph's hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Martinec was born, July 18. 1882 in Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Vaclaw Vondracek and received her schooling in her native country. She came to the United States in 1905, went to Rush County, Kansas and settled on a farm at Center, Kansas. One year later she was married to Frank Martinec in LaCrosse, Kansas. Mrs. Martinec came to Montana in 1913 to join her husband on a homestead 12 miles east of Roy. She came to Lewistown 15 years ago and resided here until her death. Burial in the Roy cemetery. ******************************************** Henry Martinec Lewistown Paper 12-15-1936 ROY, December 14, 1936 Funeral services were held Saturday morning near Roy for Henry Martinec, who died in a Lewistown hospital. Henry E. Martinec, age 20, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martinec, farmers, east of Roy. He was born on their Roy farm and attended grade school at the Coal Mine Hill School. Since then he had worked at various places and for the past few weeks was employed on the NYA project at Roy High School He became ill there Friday and received permission to go home. Later it was found he was suffering with appendicitis so he was taken to Lewistown, but his appendix burst on the way in so the operation was not successful. He is survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Martinec, seven sisters and three brothers. The funeral was held at the Z. C. B. J. community hall, 8 miles east of Roy. John Maruska conducted the service and lovely music was provided by Neighbor ladies. The pallbearers were all young men of that community, who were dear friends of the Martinec family. The casket was banked with beautiful flowers, in numerous quantity, and an unusually large crowd attended the service, and followed in the procession to Roy where burial was made in the Roy cemetery, besides a brother who had passed away a few years ago, and his grandmother who died last month. The people of this community extend deepest sympathy to the parents and other relatives. He was born May 19, 1922, in Lewistown, to Anne (Bechman) and W.S. Mather. His youth was spent on the family farm on Cassino Creek near Lewistown. He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1939, and was proud of the fact he was a High Flying Fergus County Golden Eagle. In 1948, he graduated from the University of Montana Law School where he was a member of the S.A.E. Fraternity and was a varsity football player for the Grizzlies From 1943 to 1946, he served with the U.S. Army and was overseas for 17 months during World War II. On July 20, 1944, he married Dorothy Martin while stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga. Following graduation from law school they settled in Roundup, where he was a partner of Walt Mercer and later Tom Ask. In 1965, they moved to Billings where Bill became a partner in the law firm of Moulton, Bellingham, Longo & Mather, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed serving in the Montana Legislature in the House of Representatives from 1965 to 1971, and in 1969, he ran for the U.S. Congress from the Second Congressional District. Bill was a member of the Al Bedoo Shrine, Rotary Club, Montana Bar Association, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Billings, Calvary Church in Red Lodge, the Hilands Golf Club and Yellowstone Country Club. Survivors include his wife Dorothy; sons, W.S. (Bill) Mather and his wife, Georgine of Gillette, Wyo., and Rugga and his wife, Carole of Missoula; grandsons, Sam and Greg Mather of Gillette; and granddaughters, Brooke and Whitney Mather of Missoula. A brother, Richard Mather and wife Jane of Oceanside, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Matthews was born Nov 16, l902, at Erie, Illinois, the son of Roy and Christina Matthews. He moved to Montana in 1907 and lived in Lewistown where he received his schooling and graduated from Fergus High School. After graduation, he worked at various jobs around Lewistown before moving to Butte in 1925. In 1926, he went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad when he was employed for 43 years retiring in 1969. She was a member of the First Christian Church. ******************************************* Barbara Dunnington Maxwell Lewistown Paper 4-1985 Barbara Dunnington Maxwell, 99, longtime Lewistown resident, died Friday morning in a Lewistown rest home after an extended illness. Mrs. Maxwell was born Feb. 24 1896, at Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of John and Anna Marie Eitel. She received her education at Indianapolis, and later operated a dress making establishment at Greencastle, Indiana. In 1912 she was united in marriage to James (Jim) Dunnington in Indiana. After her marriage, Mrs. Maxwell moved to Montana and lived in the Roy area when she and her husband homesteaded until 1919. They then moved to Lewistown opening the Riverside Greenhouses on the fairgrounds road When the greenhouses were destroyed by fire in 1924, they purchased land south of Lewistown near the City Park, and again built up the greenhouses. which are still operated as the Riverside Greenhouses. In 1914 she opened the downtown Riverside Flower Shop on Main Street, and in connection with this operated the "Fannie B" Tea Shop. In 1927, she sold the Tea Shop, and she and her husband Jim established the Flower Shop at the Greenhouses. After Dunnington's death in 1933, she operated the business with her son Russell until 1942, when he entered the service during World War II. She continued to run the business alone until Russell's return from the service in 1945, at which time he and his wife Helen purchased the business. In 1957, she was united in marriage to Art Maxwell in Mesa, AZ and continued to live there until his death in 1971, when she returned to Lewistown to make her home. Mrs. Maxwell was a member of Marie Chapter NO 36, Order of Eastern Star Past Matrons Club; Rebekah Lodge; and the Presbyterian Church all of Lewistown. She was active in Red Cross Work during World War II. Mrs. Maxwell is survived by one son Russell L. Dunnington, Sr. of Lewistown; two grandsons, James W. Dunnington of Kenosh, Wisconsin, and Russell L. Dunnington of Lewistown, and five great-grandchildren. After his marriage to Blanche McAllister in May, 1911, in Lewistown, McBride freighted and homesteaded in the Roy area. He returned to Forest Grove about 1918. He ranched and owned a coal mine there until 1942. He then moved to the Fairfield Bench, where he farmed and worked part-time for the railroad until moving to Havre in the mid-1950's. McKinnon, retired District Court Judge, died Sunday evening, February 7, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center due to cancer. He was 87. LeRoy was born on December 16, 1911, at Harrisville, Michigan, to Laughlan and Florence (Silverthorn) McKinnon. He lived with his family in Canada until 1927 when they moved to Ronan. They lived there for a year and then moved to St. Ignatius. He received his early schooling in Canada, Ronan and St. Ignatius. He worked in his early years as a soil scientist for the Bureau of Reclamation and was working at the Post Office when World War II broke out. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. After WW II, he worked in the courthouse in Missoula and as a flagman. He then fulfilled his dream of attending college - the University of Montana at Missoula. After graduating from law school in 1951, he moved to Lewistown to open a law practice with Jim Wilkins. He later became deputy county attorney in 1952 and on July 1, 1954, he was appointed District Court judge, a position he held until he retired in 1982. On Oct. 6, 1957, at Stanford, LeRoy was united in marriage to Dora Strong. LeRoy was a member of the Presbyterian Church; past president of the Montana Judges Association; a member of the local and state Bar Associations; past president of Kiwanis Club; served two terms as president of the Eagles; past president of the state Eagles; member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Friendship Masonic Lodge #37, where he recently received his 50-year membership pin. His interests included hunting, camping in the woods, cross-country skiing, reading, crossword puzzles, and gardening. His grandchildren were very special to him. Survivors include his wife, Dora of Lewistown; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Gail McKinnon of Helena; two daughters, Twila and her husband, Wes Delaney of Polson, and Arlene McKinnon of Hilo, Hawaii; and five grandchildren: Jason, Kyle, and Kelsie Delaney and Leigh and Park McKinnon. She attended a small country school. completing the eighth grade. In 1913, she moved to Montana with her parents, who homesteaded near Valentine. Ruth and Ike Messier were married Feb 1, 1917, in Lewistown. and made their home here since, except for two years in the 1050's when they lived in Tacoma, WA. He preceded her in death in 1971. Mrs. Messier was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church and Anchor Rebekah Lodge. Her hobbies were reading, crocheting, gardening and ceramics. She enjoyed helping her neighbors and calling on shut-ins. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Roberta Donovan of Lewistown and Mrs. Mary Daley of Missoula; one sister, Mrs. Eugenia Ward of Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Moir, Sr. in Lewistown on June 21, 1932 and they lived in Winifred until the late 1930s when they moved to Lewistown. In the early 1940s they moved to Seattle where her husband worked for Boeing. In the late 1940s the returned to Lewistown where they lived until his death in 1982. She continued to live in Lewistown until September of this year when she entered the nursing home in Billings. A great many sorrowing relatives and friends accompanied the remains to their final resting place in the Philbrook cemetery, services being conducted by Rev. A.W. Hammer of Utica, who delivered very appropriate and comforting words of condolence. The many floral offerings were beautiful. He was born Feb. 26, 1909 in Dixon, the son of William and Alphonsine Murray. He received his education in Billings and Plains. He worked for his parents herding sheep in the Broadview area and on the farm at Plains. In 1927 he started working for the Forest Service in the Thompson Falls/ Noxin area. In 1930 he went to work for the Park Service and in 1934 he began working for the Anaconda Copper Company as diesel mechanic foreman until World War II began. In 1941 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He designed the bomb bay for the B-29 and was a public relations person for many federal assignments until his discharge in 1945. He then returned to Montana and began his career in law enforcement. He served as sheriff of Rosebud County, worked as a bank examiner, truck driver, guide and supervisor for the missile installations throughout Montana. He worked as an investigative reporter for 28 years and wrote for the Western Livestock. His last assignment was the Centennial Cattle Drive in 1989. In 1976 he was in charge of the Bi-Centennial Flatboat Expedition, a project involving a flatboat trip from Fort Peck Dam to Louisiana on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers for six months. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Lewistown, VFW Post No. 9426 of Billings, Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association and Federation of American Police. On July 16, 1988 he was united in marriage to Catherine Frederick in Lewiston, Idaho. Myers, 53, Roy area farmer and rancher, died Monday evening at Central Montana Hospital after an illness of several months. Rosary will be recited this evening at the Creel-Morrison-Retz Chapel. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, with Rev. Martin Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, with military honors at grave side. Myers was born March 3, 1929, in Spokane, WA., the son of Stella and Michael Myers. He spent his entire life on where his parents homesteaded, l7 miles east of Roy. He attended schools in Roy, where he was taught by his mother. After his graduation from Roy High School in 1940, he attended Gonzaga University in Spokane where he majored in engineering. Myers served in the Pacific Theater in the Army during World War II. After his service he returned to Roy and purchased the ranch east of Roy. He was residing there at the time his death. He was married to Agusta Fink, November 6, 1946, in Lewistown. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Roy American Legion Post No. 96, past chairman of the Valley View School District, past secretary of the Roy Farmers Union, and past member of the Roy School Board and past chairman Roy High School Board. Survivors include his wife of Roy; six daughters, Jennifer and Shannon of Roy, Theresa, Sheila, and Mrs. Nanette Miller at Lewistown, and Mrs. Marvin Tyson, Gillette, WY; two sons, Mark of Roy and Donald M. Myers of Lewistown, and six grandchildren. Source Billings Gazette ***************************************************************** STELLA MYERS Lewistown paper 2-18-1976 The Rosary and Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Stella Myers, 88, of Roy and Lewistown, was held this morning at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Father Martin Fisher as celebrant. Cherelee Martin was the soloist and Joyce Streber, the organist. Pallbearers were Nick Spiroff, Roy Coulter. Milton Kalina. Monty Lund. Dick Distad and Jim Horyna Named as honorary pallbearers were Ray Distad, Vern Puckett and Harold Bauman. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. The Creel-Morrison-Retz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Myers died Sunday afternoon at the family home 12 miles east of Roy She had returned there to live recently, after Living in Lewistown since 1964. She was born Sept, 30, 1887, at Murdock. MI. the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Ed McGinnis. She received her elementary education at Murdock, attended St. Cloud Normal School and was graduated from the University of Minnesota. She taught school for ten years in Minnesota before moving to Ray in 1916, where she filed on a homestead. She taught school in Roy, Moore and Hobson for 32 years. She also taught music for many years. She retired in 1964 and moved into Lewistown. On Sept 4, 1917, she was married to Michael E Myers in Lewistown. Mrs Myers was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish, Sacred Heart Altar Society, St. Leo's Altar Society, Lady of Fatima Guild, Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary and the National Retired Teachers Association Survivors include the widower ,of Lewistown; a son, Don Myers. Roy; a sister, Mrs Mary Houghten. Minneapolis. MI: eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
