Charles E. Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Peterson of this city , was commended for bravery in action in Italy last December for his work in helping a platoon of American scouts cross a river during October, according to a copy of an official headquarters order received here. The citation read: "When he saw his two platoon scouts floundering while attempting to cross the .........river near .........Italy, the early morning of .......October, 1943, Pfc. Peterson jumped into the water while artillery and machine gun fire whizzed overhead, and assisted the scouts to safety on the opposite bank. Returning into the water which was up to his chin, Pfc. Peterson assisted his entire platoon of 25 men to safety on the opposite bank. Pfc. Peterson's actions, over a period of 45 minutes, prevented the crossing becoming disorganized, thus assisting materially in success of his platoon's mission of finding a favorable river crossing site, and serving as 2nd battalion's protective advance guard. Private Peterson broke into the news about a year ago when he was a member of the personal guard furnished President Roosevelt at the Casablanca conference. ********************************************************* Gordon D. Although his death was not unexpected, as he had been ailing for some time, it came as a sad blow to his children, all but one of whom were with him to the last, as well as to the entire community with the progress of which he had been a vital force, forceful factor for over fifty years. Sam Phillips, or Uncle Sam as he was known by hosts of friends throughout Central Montana was one of the best known, if not the last of those early day pioneers who came to Montana in the early 1880's and during his long residence in Fergus County had served in public capacity as County Commissioner, Mayor of Lewistown and president of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as for many years serving in the semi-public capacity of president of the old Empire Bank & Trust Co. He was one of the most widely known sheep men of Montana. Born in Paisley, Scotland, on March 11, 1849 of Sturdy Scotch parentage, Sam Phillips crossed the ocean to Canada at the age of 17. For three years he worked in and around Toronto, Ont., earning sufficient money to pay back his passage fare from Scotland and then moved to New York state from where, after several years, he moved to Pennsylvania, working in the anthracite coal fields, later returning to New York, where he met Margaret Paige, who later became his wife. In the latter part of 1879 he came up the river to Fort Benton and overland to Helena early in 1880, where he wintered. The same year he visited the Judith Basin, returning to Helena and coming back to the Judith Basin with a band of sheep in 1881. In 1883 he WAS joined in Billings by Margaret Paige and they were married there, coming on to the present Phillips Ranch on Big Spring creek, about four miles above Lewistown, where they resided until about 1905, when he moved into Lewistown to take over the presidency of the Empire Bank & Trust Co, soon thereafter. He was a charter member and one of the first worshipful masters of Lewistown Lodge No. 37 and throughout his lifetime was a devoted and active member of that lodge, also being a past Commander of the Calvary Commandery, Knight Templar, a past officer of Hiram Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and a member of the Algeria Shrine. He was elected commissioner of Fergus County on the Republican ticket in the fall of 1896, and reelected for the second term in 1902, serving as chairman of the board during his last term. Throughout his life, Sam Phillips probably carried on more private charities than any other man in Lewistown, it was stated by a long-time friend Friday night. None of these benefaction were ever mentioned by him in any way. "Among the men who for over 50 years have been prominently identified with the wool industry in the Central Montana section is Samuel Phillips," says a recent history of this part of the state. He went west from New York state in 1879, and after reaching Helena, started on an extended tour of the territory, looking for a good location where he might embark in the wool industry. He traversed what is now Fergus County and while camped on Big Casino Creek, near what is now Lewistown, a detachment under General Ruger passed through, looking for a good location for a government post, and afterward selected Fort Maginnis. Mr. Phillips had continued his journey as far as Arrow Creek, in the direction of Fort Benton, then the head of navigation and the supply point of the territory, when the dispatches from General Ruger announcing to the war department the selection of the post site, had passed him. He went on to Fort Benton, looked over the country north in the vicinity of Fort Assiniboine, and later back to Helena. The following year May, 1881 Mr. Phillips and Thomas Leard, also a New Yorker, formed a partnership, purchased 2,000 head of sheep on Cora Creek, near what is now Great Falls, and drove them to the valley of Big Spring, locating on the stream some four miles from the present site of Lewistown. The white people in the valley were D. M. Crowley, John Crowley, J. B. Pichette and Robert Sullenger. The partnership with Mr. Leard continued for two years. Mr. Phillips was a leader for many years in Republican political circles and a life-long member of the Presbyterian church. His wife passed away in this city about 15 years ago. He is survived by six children; Mrs. Elizabeth Morris, John, Mrs. Margaret Bristol and Robert J. Phillips, all of this city; Mrs. Della Stowe of San Francisco, California, and Mrs. Mary Gorham of Juneau, Alaska. All were with him at the time of death except Mrs. Stowe who left about a week ago to return to her home in California. She is expected back for the funeral. There are also 11 surviving grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, from the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Clarence W Orner giving the sermon. The Impressive rites of the Knight Templar will be carried out at the church, while the Masonic Blue lodge ceremonies will mark the burial. The casket will be open at the Creel Chapel from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, but will not be open at the church.
